COLLECTIONS PLANNING

HA 488M (1.5 units)

In times of diminishing resources, new opportunities, and increasing
accountability, museums everywhere are challenged to take more
thoughtful and strategic approaches to collections development. This
new course explores planning processes that enable museums to
create
an institutional vision of the collection that would best meet their
needs, and methods for achieving this vision. Participants will learn
to set collections goals that are consistent with institutional
mission and community interests; integrate collections into the
museum's strategic, interpretive, and financial planning; assess the
strengths and weaknesses of current collections, conduct gap analysis,
and set priorities for acquisitions and deaccessioning; collaborate
with other institutions to identify and access complementary
collections; and successfully implement collections plans.
