Greetings from Boise, Idaho and the Western Museums Association!

I was hopeful some helpful BCMA members on the listserv could help me identify speakers (or potential interest in speaking) for a session I would like to present at your upcoming BCMA conference in Kelowna this October. I have proposed a session on implementing a Successful Intern Program. Forgive my lack of knowledge of the Canadian system, but from the few conversations I've had with Canadian colleagues it seems this could be an informative session, as well as interesting because we do have substantial differences in our viewpoints of volunteer/paid and transition into paid positions. I know this has been a popular topic for western museums, and a critical community/educational program in our community.

Interns can be a valuable asset to museums especially for institutions with limited staff and resources. Although lack of time, organization, and funds appear as formidable obstacles you can effectively implement an intern program so that the time and energy you invest is worthwhile not only for your museum but also for the individual. Panelists will discuss the criteria for managing a successful program including how to get organized and how to effectively balance the expectations of your museum, the intern, and the coordinating educational institution. Additionally, panelists will discuss some of similarities and differences between Canadian and American programs, employment laws, and attitudes toward museum internships.

I need assistance in identifying panelists. If you are interested, please reply offline to Heather@boiseartmuseum.org  or give me a call at the number below.

I appreciate any assistance and look forward to meeting you all and seeing familiar friends as well at the October Conference!

Thanks and Best wishes,
