Spi= rit of BC Week 2007 - February 9-17, 2007

Spirit of BC Week= was created in 2005 to foster community spirit and excitement and celebrate the five-year countdown to the 2010 Winter Olympic and Paralympic Games.  Over the long-term, the goal is for Spirit of BC Week to become an annual festival and celebration of community spirit in towns and cities throughout BC with events being hosted that celebrate the core areas of 2010 Legacies Now – arts, culture and heritage, literacy, sport and recreation, volunteerism and inclusion.

Arts Now and the BC Museums Association (BCMA)
Arts Now has part= nered with the BCMA to encourage BCMA Institutional Members to participate in their local Spirit of BC Week 2007 celebration and in turn, help promote local appreciation of their community’s own rich heritage.

Members of the BC= MA are encouraged to find ways to link with their community’s Spirit of BC Week celebrations. Spirit of BC Week is closely followed by Heritage Week in BC, so it provides an opportunity for communities to connect these important concepts. BCMA members are invited to create special one day or “all week” special even= ts or promotions, such as “Family Museum Day”; or by tagging an alread= y- scheduled exhibit; or offering a special sneak preview of a planned exhibit opening or upcoming BC Heritage Week event. Museums, art galleries and heritage properties have the flexibility in choosing the day= and time of the event during the Spirit of BC Week.

For complete, down= loadable Guidelines & Application Form:
Spirit of BC We= ek Subsidies

Level of Assis= tance
Sm= all subsidies of up to $500 are available to help offset lost revenue or additional hosting or promotional costs. Local Spirit of BC Community Committees provide participating institutions with promotional material and Arts Now will provide an investment of up to $500 to BCMA Institutional Members for their initiative(s) as part of the Spirit of BC Week 2007 celebrations (February 9-17, 2007).

Application Deadline:
Ap= plications will be accepted between January 15 and 19, 2007 and will be reviewed on a first come basis. Applications can be sent by fax or email.

Since the ruling by the BC Supreme Court this fall stating that BC school districts cannot charge fees "for any materials or equipment required to finish a course leading to graduation", or "for field trips considered necessary to the curriculum", the repercussions for school districts and the fates of school programs are just beginning to come to light.

How will this ruling impact school field trips to BC's museums, art galleries and heritage or historic sites? How will, or could your institution be affected?

The BC Museums Association is collecting "potential impact" statements from BC (only) institutions that are, or likely to be, adversely affected by school district measures that may result, or have already resulted from this ruling.

Submissions will be compiled, posted to the BCMA website and forwarded to the BC Heritage Branch and Ministers, The Honourable Shirley Bond (Education) and The Honourable Stan Hagen (Tourism, Sport and the Arts).

Please respond by "Reply" and inserting your responses to each point, below, (Confidential replies also welcome, see below):

1. Has your institution been, or will be, affected by the school fees ruling? (Please provide the name and location of your institution):

2. If 'Yes' or 'Possibly', please list the details, (ie. school visits, other school or student programming, affect on overall visitation, actual or potential revenue loss, impact on staff, etc)(Point form, please):

3. If applicable, what percentage (and/or actual $$$-amount), of your institution's annual revenue relies on school visits and other student programming? Are there other funding sources that may be lost or diminished if school visit programs are curtailed or eliminated?

4. Has your institution had discussions with your school district about the future of school visits?  If so, what is the nature of these discussions and likely outcomes?

5. If applicable, what measures will or would your institution take to offset any adverse affect of the school fees ruling?

6. Any other comments? (Point form, please).

To Reply in confidence, please Forward your response to:

MUSEUMS: THE REAL THING!

“The objects and information held by museums lie at the h= eart of all other activities they undertake.” Standard Practices Handbook for Museums (2005)

Museums provide the real thing; collections and the stories behind them foster an understanding of identity and a sense of belonging within communities.

However, museums are challenged with the task of competing with other attractions and balancing the needs of the public with the essential functions of a museum: acquiring, conserving, communicating, exhibiting and researching material evidence. Furthermore, museums are often asked to demonstrate their relevance to their communities, stakeholders and funders.

We are seeking 2007 Conference session proposals that examine, challenge and recognize the uniqueness of museums and museum work: who museums are, who they serve, what they do, and why they do it.

Session proposals could include relevant and timely topics in the areas of:
