BC MUSEUMS ASSOCIATION ANNOUNCES PARKSVILLE CONFERENCE

"Agents of Change - Engaging Our Communities," October 23-26, 2013

Tigh-Na-Mara Seaside Spa and Resort, Parksville, BC

20 August 2013 -- Museums, galleries and archives - MGAs - are
reassessing their roles and find themselves ideally placed to foster
critical dialogue needed for greater awareness of, and workable
solutions to, both local and global problems.

At a time when many communities are facing challenging issues, MGAs can
serve a critical role as public places for encouraging civic engagement,
sharing information, and encouraging innovative thinking. This year's
conference will explore a range of ways that MGAs can facilitate
increased civic engagement and awareness among the communities they serve.

The BC Museums Association encourages both members and non-members,
especially policy makers, educators, and creative professionals - anyone
interested in the power of civic engagement - to attend this critically
important conference.

"Museums and galleries are already highly valued educational and
cultural resources in the communities they serve," says BC Museums
Association President Peter Ord, "but they can, and need to be, even
more relevant and beneficial to citizens. This conference is an
important milestone in the evolution of the sector, as they seek to
become an even greater contributor to an informed and involved public."

The conference will include speakers and panelists from across Canada.
Keynote speakers include Douglas Worts and Robert R. Janes. Worts is a
culture & sustainability specialist with WorldViews Consulting, and a
past Senior Research Fellow of the Canadian Museums Association. Janes
is Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Museum Management and Curatorship,
Visiting Research Fellow at the School of Museum Studies at the
University of Leicester (UK), Adjunct Professor of Archaeology at the
University of Calgary, Canada, and past President and CEO of the Glenbow
Museum.

The conference will be held on October 23-26 at the award-winning
Tigh-Na-Mara< https://www.facebook.com/Tigh.Na.Mara> Seaside Spa Resort
and Conference Centre in Parksville, BC, and is organized in
conjunctions with the Parksville Museum and Archives<
