*Chilliwack to host British Columbia Historical Federation Conference in
May*
*For Immediate Release*
March 28, 2017 *- *The British Columbia Historical Federation (BCHF) is
holding its annual conference in Chilliwack on May 25th to 28th in
partnership with the Chilliwack Museum and Historical Society. The
conference - themed *Land, Water, People - *features workshops, lectures
and field trips that explore the people and geography of Chilliwack and the
Fraser Valley. The four day conference will conclude with a Gala Awards
Banquet at the Coast Hotel where among other honours, the Lieutenant
Governor’s Prize for Best Historical Writing will be presented.
The provincial conference will see delegates from historical societies,
museums, archives, genealogical centres, historic sites and universities
from as far away as Mackenzie descend into Chilliwack’s historic downtown
core.
The conference will open with a keynote address from Gwen Point, Chancellor
of the University of the Fraser Valley. Guest speakers include Mark Smith,
General Counsel and Director of Process of the BC Treaty Commission; water
resources engineer and consultant Neil Peters; Historian and author Jane
Watt; Jason Beck, Curator of the BC Sports Hall of Fame, UFV history
department faculty members Scott Sheffield and Robin Anderson, former
Chilliwack Museum Curator and Royal BC Museum Associate Registrar Paul
Ferguson, heritage consultant and architect Donald Luxton; Sharanjit
Sandhra, Coordinator at UFV’s Centre for Indo-Canadian Studies; Mark
Mackenzie, Fraser River historian; and others.
Delegates will choose from a selection of field trips including a downtown
heritage building tour guided by the Heritage Chilliwack Society; a tour of
the Stó:lō Research and Resource Management Centre; a beer tasting and hops
trip featuring Chaos & Solace, Old Yale Brewing and the Chilliwack Hop
Farm; a guided tour of the Atchelitz Threshermen’s Museum; and riverboat
landing bus tour.
Her Honour Judith Guichon, Lieutenant Governor of BC will be in attendance
for a special evening presentation featuring artist David Campion and
Sandra Shields’ provocative exhibit, *Grand Theft Terra Firma*, which is
currently on display at the *Reach* Museum Gallery, Abbotsford.
Registration for the conference is now open to both members of the BCHF and
