The model that I have seen used successfully in Burnaby and with the Langley Heritage Society, among others, has been to have a caretaker in for reduced/minimal rent. Significant fixes are contracted out but general caretaking duties such as cutting the lawn, gardening, minor repairs, etc are the responsibility of the caretaker.

Subject: [BCMA Members Only] Looking for advice on how to employ a caretaker
At the Friends of Fintry we are wanting to bring on a caretaker to live in our house and take care of it during the off season. We initially were offering to provide the home in lieu of salary but have been informed that we cannot do this.
Does anybody have experience with "live in" caretakers and could advise us on how to proceed?
Thanks,
Keith J Johnston
