It seems that it is often difficult when there is a change in governance
of a museum between an independent Board/Society and a City.=20

=20

Feelings get hurt and angry words are said, often to the media. It is a
bit like parents fighting during a divorce and regardless of who is
right, the children suffer.

=20

There are pros and cons to such changes in governance and I have seen
this first hand several times. The bottom line is that eventually the
dust will settle and hopefully the "child" (the museum) will survive and
grow into a mature institution, and the "parents" will eventually talk
to each other again as they have a common love of the "child".=20

=20

The people who have loved and supported the museum over many years will
hopefully not abandon their "child" just because they no longer are
raising it. I know it is very hard to put bruised egos aside. I can
suggest not burning the bridges - but by all means maintain a distance
for a cooling off period.=20

Also if it is a fait accompli and is not a matter under negotiation or
legal battle, then I suggest biting one's tongue because angry words
once said and/or printed, cannot really be retracted and it is the
"child" which suffers.=20

I am curious as to whether you had a working contract with the city or
was it just an informal agreement?

What was their reason for this unorthodox action?

	It is about time I brought you up to date on the status of the
Kamloops Museum Association. We have been going through quite a lot
during the past year. The Board was fired by the City of Kamloops. The
museum staff said that they could not work for two bosses. They said we
were micro-managing the museum.=20

	We had several meetings with the City, but they do not want an
association with any policy making power what-so-ever. They want a
"Friends of the Museum," which would raise money for them and will be
there if they need any volunteers.=20

	=20

	The Kamloops Museum Association has been in existence since
1937, but the City didn't seem at all concerned about losing a group of
dedicated volunteers who have worked so hard for the museum for so long.
We will be submitting our papers to dissolve the association shortly.

	=20

	I'm not sure how all this affects the museum's chances of
receiving the Arts Council Grant in the future. I know, as the KMA, we
had to prove to them that we were a policy making board, or we would not
receive our grant. The City wants the "Friends of" group so it will not
have any policy making powers. Apparently the museum received their
grant this year.

	I have enjoyed working with the BCMA and all the members. I
always found the conferences very informative and I really enjoyed
meeting and working with the other members of the BCMA. I particularly
enjoyed working with you, Jim.
