GARDEN
Paintings and Poetry by Tricia Sellmer and Alexander Forbes
Saturday, September 8 to Saturday October 13, 2007
Opening Reception: Saturday September 8, 3:00-5:00pm
The Maple Ridge Art Gallery is pleased to present Garden, a joint
exhibit of paintings and drawings by Tricia Sellmer and poems by
Alexander Forbes, held at the Maple Ridge Art Gallery from September 8
to October 13, 2007; an opening Reception on September 8, from 3 to 5 pm
will highlight an artist talk by Sellmer and poetry reading by Forbes.
Throughout her career, Tricia Sellmer has explored the idea of garden as
a metaphor for personal experiences; creating a pathway that meanders
and weaves its way through stories, connecting thought and action to
experience. In the exhibit Garden the starting point for this journey is
a pair of jeweled, red, sling-backed shoes. Shoes are prevalent in
experiences of transformation, such as Dorothy in the Wizard of Oz, the
fairy tale of Cinderella and the term ‘to walk a mile in his shoes’. In
Garden, magical images of unruly garden scenes create an atmosphere to
explore our own path, connecting with our own stories.
Included in the exhibit are nine poems on gardens, by Alexander Forbes.
Arranged chronologically from spring to fall, they counterpoint the
paintings of Tricia Sellmer, which are arranged thematically rather than
chronologically. Two different but complementary movements are thus
introduced into the exhibit, in a polyphonic arrangement of sounds and
images that replicates what one actually experiences when visiting a
garden.
Both, Sellmer and Forbes have successfully collaborated in the past
producing joint exhibits and publications of their work. Projects
include Rumours of Bees, Double Exposure, and after the moon a blue ocean.
