Job Title: Museum Assistant - Curatorial

Hourly Wage: $15.31 – $17.88 per hour plus 12% in lieu of benefits

Placement Date: Approximately September 10 to approximately November 30, 
2007

(12 to 16 weeks - dependent on funding)

Applications are currently being accepted from a dynamic and committed 
individual to fill a temporary full-time Career Placement for a Museum 
Assistant - Cultural from approximately September 10 until approximately 
November 30, 2007 (dependent on funding).

1. Duties and Responsibilities

As a student employee in the Community Development Division of the 
Township of Langley, the incumbent will work on short-term projects at 
the Langley Centennial Museum & National Exhibition Centre. Curatorial 
projects are aimed at the care and maintenance of the collection, 
enriching on-line databases of artefacts and photographs, and assisting 
with projected exhibition projects at the Museum.

The Museum Assistant – Cultural will support four main projects:

- Assist with the complete documentation of an internally produced 
temporary exhibit on the history of the local Kwantlen First Nation 
(which closes October 21) and the return of the loaned works to the 
Kwantlen First Nation, complete with documentation.

- Assist in the research of primary research material related to the 
creation and operation of the Hudson’s BayCompany farm in Langley during 
the mid-nineteenth century.

- Assist in the identification and collation of primary documents 
related to the Hudson’s Bay Farm, its traditional use as a trade route 
by the Coast Salish peoples, with a particular emphasis on documents in 
the BC Provincial Archives.

- Assist in the collection of local histories related to the Farm, 
particularly from the Kwantlen First Nation who worked on the farm. 
Review existing information on First Nations Baskets (primarily 
Nlaka’pamux) and crossreferencing and annotating contemporary research 
with James Teit’s text of /Coiled Basketry in British Columbia and the 
Surrounding Region /(1928) (if time permits).

2. Qualifications, Knowledge and Skills required for this position include:

- University or college student entering second year of study or 
greater, with courses in history, ethnology, anthropology, fine arts, 
museum studies, or other related field;

- Connections with local First Nations and experience with First Nations 
cultural material;

- Computer skills including knowledge & experience using word 
processing, Access, Excel, and database software would be definite assets;

- Excellent organizational, technical writing, research, and manual 
skills with a penchant for attention to details;

- Excellent interpersonal skills, preferably with some experience in 
collaborative projects;

- Previous experience in a museum environment would be an asset.

3. Position dependent on funding and the following eligibility criteria:

- Must be a Canadian student, legally entitled to study and work in 
Canada, preferably returning to school and between the ages of 16 to 30 
and willing to commit to a work assignment up to 12 weeks.
