In 2008, the Kelowna General Hospital celebrates its centennial year,
and to commemorate this milestone the Kelowna Museums Society is opening
a special exhibition at the Okanagan Heritage Museum. Kelowna General
Hospital: Celebrating 100 Years 1908-2008 will run from January 10 until
June 12, 2008. The Okanagan Heritage Museum was awarded $10,000 from the
Spirit of BC arts fund as well as funds from the Kelowna General
Hospital Foundation Centennial Committee for the development of this
exhibition.

The Public Grand Opening will take place on Saturday, January 12,
11:00am-1:00pm at the Okanagan Heritage Museum, located at 470 Queensway
Avenue. For the Public Grand Opening the museum will conduct free guided
tours of the exhibition, every half hour starting at 11:00am. Everyone
is welcome to attend and admission is by donation. Call (250) 763-2417
for more information.

The Kelowna General Hospital exhibition was developed from the Kelowna
Museums’ considerable collection of hospital and medical artefacts,
hospital records, and historic photographs which tell the stories of the
nurses, doctors, and behind-the-scenes staff who have been a part of the
Kelowna General Hospital over the last century. Come explore this new
exhibition and look back on one hundred years of health and medicine in
Kelowna. >From bed pans to iron lungs, this is one exhibition you won’t
want to miss!

The Kelowna General Hospital officially opened on April 2^nd 1908 at its
present site on land donated by the Kelowna Land & Orchard Company. The
original hospital accommodated 19 patients and included nurses’ quarters
and separate wards for men and women. In 1940, a new, more modern
hospital was built next to the old one and the original building was
eventually demolished in 1967. Today, the Kelowna General Hospital
continues to grow and sees thousands of patients through its doors every
year.

The Okanagan Heritage Museum is a facility of the Kelowna Museums
Society, a non-profit, charitable organization dedicated to a greater
awareness of the agricultural, wine-producing, military, and cultural
heritages of the Okanagan. The Okanagan Heritage Museum is located at
470 Queensway Avenue, corner of Ellis and Queensway in Kelowna’s
Cultural District. Open Monday-Friday 10am-5pm and Saturday 10am-4pm.
Admission is by donation. For more information please visit
