Executive Director, Creative City Network of Canada
The Organization
The Creative City Network of Canada (CCNC) is a national non-profit
organization that operates as a knowledge-sharing, research, public
education, and professional development resource in the field of
municipal cultural policy, planning, and practice. It connects staff of
Canadian municipalities who are responsible for arts, culture, and
heritage development, enabling them to share expertise, information, and
best practices. Guided by members’ needs and issues, the Creative City
Network undertakes research to support and enhance the work in this
field. Through its work, the Network helps build the capacity of
municipal cultural planning professionals – and their municipalities –
to facilitate, nurture, and support cultural development in their
communities.
The organization’s core members are municipal staff from communities
across Canada. The Network provides both online and face-to-face
opportunities to work together, share knowledge, and further
professional development.
Summary of Executive Director Responsibilities
The Executive Director reports directly to the President of the Board of
Directors. The Board, composed of municipal cultural staff, broadly
represents the regions of Canada. The Executive Director is responsible
for managing a small staff in an office located in downtown Vancouver.
The Executive Director is champion for municipal cultural planning and
practices as a key tool for building livable and sustainable
communities. The Director is responsible and accountable for the
strategic management of the Network, the development of partnerships and
relationships with local, provincial, national and international
agencies, the private sector, as well as other levels of government.
Reporting directly to the President of the CCNC Board of Directors, the
Executive Director is responsible for:
• The management and operation of the organization,
• Providing leadership to the staff team in the Vancouver office
• Developing relationships with all levels of government and the private
sector
• Project management and program services to members
The Executive Director develops relationships and partnerships based on
Board policy
and planning, advises the Board and implements policy as approved by the
Board.
Statement of Qualifications
University Degree in one of the following areas; Arts or Cultural
administration, Public
Administration or equivalent qualifications and work experience.
Minimum of 3 years experience with municipal cultural (arts and
heritage) development with direct experience managing programs,
financial management, supervising staff and developing policy.
Language: Excellent verbal and written English. French is desirable but
not required.
Knowledge:
• Canadian municipal cultural planning, practices, issues and trends
• Local, provincial, national and international cultural environment
(agencies &
government) funding programs and processes
• Non-profit, membership-based organizations and practices
• Human resources and financial management practices
• Strategic and operational planning processes
• Experience working with public and private funders and sponsors
Competencies/skills:
• Demonstrated success and experience with grant writing, reporting,
revenue generation
and fundraising
• Ability to work within deadlines, to establish priorities and to
develop work plans with
defined objectives and outcomes
• Proven leadership skills in a team environment
• Ability to analyze problems and to develop realistic and innovative
solutions
• Proven ability to professionally represent a high-profile organization
• A creative, self-directed individual with strong communication and
inter-personal skills
• Ability to deliver effective presentations
• Advanced computer skills including the ability to manage databases,
listservs, websites,
as well as advanced spreadsheet, word processing, and other software
competencies
• Ability to travel and work with a flexible schedule
Duties/Responsibilities:
• Acts as a champion, representing the network on cultural planning
practices, issues and
needs
• Acts as direct liaison with the Centre for Expertise on Culture &
Communities,
exchanging information and reporting to the Board of CNCC
• Liaises with all levels of government and external agencies in order
to initiate strategic
cultural development partnerships and programs for the benefit of the
membership
• Facilitates and implements the Board of Directors’ strategic planning
initiatives
• Develops annual work plans to achieve strategic objectives
• Prepares and delivers monthly written financial and activity reports
• Recruits, develops, trains, coaches and supervises a team of staff to
achieve objectives,
deliverables and outcomes
• Builds the profile and strong membership of the Network
• Develops and implements funding partnerships and revenue opportunities
• Has the responsibility and authority for the financial control in all
areas of the CCNC’s
activity.
• Develops annual budget in consultation with the staff, where
appropriate, and in
collaboration with the Treasurer and/or the appropriate Board Committee,
for approval by
the Board of Directors.
• Manages the daily operations of the organization including budgets,
payroll, listservs,
website, services and communications.
• Acts as a spokesperson for media inquiries
Salary to commensurate with experience.
