Dear BCMA members:
The federal government's Young Canada Works (YCW) wage subsidy
program for summer 2007 is now "live" and open for applications from
heritage organizations across Canada.
Summary info from their web site:
* provides support for student wages for 2,300 jobs
* available to most heritage organizations
* funding for up to 16-week blocks, May through August 2007
* application Deadline: February 1, 2007
I've provided text from their web site (below) and the link for you
to follow so that you can apply for funding on-line.
As in past years, to use Young Canada Works you must post your job
on-line and our students will post their resumes on-line. To ensure
your jobs are noticed by our Cultural Resource Management, History,
and History in Art students here at the University of Victoria, I
strongly urge you to email me your job posting (dbailey@uvic.ca) - in
addition to posting it with Young Canada Works. With your permission
I will post your job on our Co-op web site, batch the student resumes
together and send them to you when you request them. Please note: all
jobs must be at least 13 weeks in duration to qualify for UVic Co-op
credit.
This summer we have over 100 students who are seeking challenging
work across Canada. To remind you of our students' skills and the

HIRING PROCESS
Students are available for work in four- or eight-month terms,
year-round. Work terms usually begin in January, May and September --
but start dates are negotiable.
Students must be paid to gain university credit for their work term.
Salaries in the Heritage "industry" range from $1500-2000/month (on
average) depending on the academic and co-op experience level of the
student you hire.
In order to proceed, please identify the required skills, duties,
responsibilities and salary range. We will post your job description
and send you student resumes. We prefer to post each job for at
least five working days, but we can accommodate "rush" requests.
Once you short-list the students you'd like to meet, we'll set up
interviews for you -- either via telephone or in person. Following
the interviews, let us know the name of your preferred candidate(s)
and we'll put a 24-hour offer to the student(s). Once placements are
confirmed, we ask you to send us a copy of your letter of offer to
each student.
In mid-term, someone from the university will conduct a site
evaluation to discuss the student's progress in the work-term.

ACADEMIC REQUIREMENTS
The Humanities, Fine Arts & Professional Writing Co-operative
Education Program offers paid employment to students who are able to
maintain at least a B average and satisfactorily complete four work
terms.
The work terms are designed to combine practical work experience with
the theoretical content of course study, with evaluation by both the
employer and the faculty supervisor.
Students in Co-operative Education must carry a full course load
during each study term.
All our co-op students have completed at least second year of their
undergraduate degree. Some already hold degrees and are working on
graduate studies.
Our Professional Writing students specialize in journalism,
publishing, technical writing and corporate communications. They are
trained in electronic media including desktop publishing and web page
development. Our Humanities students possess skills in research,
writing, management, languages and critical thinking. They often
secure employment in art galleries, museums, archives, libraries,
not-for profit and pro-social organizations and the tourist sector.
Our Visual Arts students possess graphic and creative arts skills.
