Media Release
The Board of Directors of the Nanaimo Art Gallery is pleased to announce the
appointment of Scott Marsden as Executive Director of the Gallery, effective
February 12th, 2007.
Mr. Marsden is presently the Director/Curator of the Yukon Arts Centre
Public Art Gallery in Whitehorse where he has been developing the exhibition
programming and the curatorial direction of the gallery since 2001. Prior to
that he spent time as a Project Manager for the University of Alberta
Museums and Collections, as the Executive Director of the Art Gallery of
Southwestern Manitoba in Brandon, and as the Development Officer for the
Robert McLaughlin Gallery in Oshawa, Ontario.
Mr. Marsden has twenty years of experience working at different levels of
research, development and presentation of exhibition programming, community
outreach, managing artist's contracts and exhibition tours, and art
collection management. He has a strong interest and experience in working
with diverse contemporary art practices with a focus on different aesthetic
and cultural perspectives, and their relation to contemporary social and
cultural issues. He is also strongly committed to the importance of
educational programming as part of the gallery's role in the community.
In expressing pleasure that Mr. Marsden has agreed to take on the position
of Executive Director for the Gallery, Ian Niamath, President of the Nanaimo
Art Gallery Society Board of Directors said:
"This is a really important time for the Gallery as we look at the future
development of Nanaimo. With the downtown revitalization that is already
happening, and the very strong commitment to the role that cultural
activities play in making the city an exciting place for both local
residents and visitors, the board feels that the Nanaimo Art Gallery can be
an even more vital part of the community in the future. We believe that with
his experience and proven track record, Scott Marsden is the ideal person to
move the gallery forward, and we look forward to working with him."
