JOB DESCRIPTION
Museum Assistant - Contract
Britannia Heritage Shipyard – West Wing Exhibit Project

THE BRITANNIA HERITAGE SHIPYARD
The Britannia Heritage Shipyard is owned and operated by the City of 
Richmond. It is a National Historic Site dedicated to the preservation 
and restoration of the Shipyard and surrounding buildings as an active 
wooden boat centre and waterfront park.

JOB SUMMARY
The Britannia Heritage Shipyard is undergoing exhibit changes in order 
to reflect the historical uses of the west wing in the shipyard building 
on the east end of the site. Originally, the west wing housed a 
carpentry shop, engine room and machine shop. This project focuses on 
restoring these areas to reflect their historical uses.

The Museum Assistant will predominantly be responsible for assistance 
with exhibit installation and restoration. This contract position will 
support the Project Manager and Museum Preparator in meeting project 
objectives, ultimately enabling visitors to understand the complexities 
of a working shipyard.

Successful candidates will be selected based on their education, 
experience and skills related to the job. We wish to thank all

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

    * This position reports to the Site Director, Project Manager and
      Museum Preparator
    * Duties include exhibit installation assistance with regards to
      artifact cleaning, display movement, and inventory information
      gathering
    * Responsible for completion of multiple related tasks with varying
      deadlines

SKILLS

    * Strong organizational and interpersonal skills
    * Initiative and ability to work both independently and in a team
      setting
    * Excellent oral communication skills
    * Considerable interest in the principles, practices and techniques
      in relation to exhibit preparation, installation and artifact
      conservation

    * Ability to represent the City’s corporate objectives to internal
      and external audiences

    * Strong problem solving skills (efficient and effective decision
      making)
    * Ability to manage multiple tasks and deadlines
    * Ability to assist with lifting and positioning of heavy objects

QUALIFICATIONS

    * High School Diploma
    * University or Diploma in a related discipline is an asset, but not
      required
    * Strong interest in arts and heritage, including museum studies,
      history, archaeology or anthropology.
    * Valid Class 5 BC Drivers License
    * RCMP Criminal Records Check is required

HOURS OF WORK
Contract for 300 hours @ $18.00 per hour

February 25hrs/week
March 25hrs/week
April 25hrs/week

LENGTH OF CONTRACT
February 5, 2007 – April 27, 2007 (12 weeks)
