Welcome to NEWS KICKS Vol 3 - #13
1. The Snow King's Work Shop Is Open!
At the Museum: Saturdays 10am to 2pm & Wednesdays 4pm to 8pm
Become a MasqueParader and transform yourself into a Wild Creature of the
Mountain!
The Snow King comes to Golden after dark on Feb. 10 to invite all his
MasqueParaders back to the Civic Centre for a fantastic night of dancing
to live music - old time fiddling, Metis dancing, 1950’s rock ‘n roll
and even a bit of Bollywood!
It’s FREE to be a MasqueParader and take part in the Pageant and the
night of dancing and spectacle at the Civic Centre. But you do have to
participate to be invited!
All you need is the desire to celebrate our mountain life. Artistic talent
welcome but joi de vivre is much more important!
To become a MasqueParader - all ages welcome - come out to the Museum over
the next couple of weeks to see the creation of the 3 metre high Snow King
puppet. Spend 45 minutes and fashion a beautiful globe lantern to carry,
candle lit, during the MasqueParade.
Spend a little more time and invent a fantastical head dress to represent
one of the wild creatures of our mountain home.
Special arrangements can be made for groups who would like to use the Work
Shop at other times. We can also give instructions for teachers who would
like to participate with their students but would prefer to work in their
classrooms. Contact Bill at Kicking Horse Culture - 344-6186 - to make
arrangements.
To partially cover material costs, we are suggesting a donation of a
loonie for the globe lanterns, a toonie for bamboo lanterns and prices
around the $.25 mark for fancy embellishments. What you create is yours to
carry and wear in the MasqueParade and then to take home.
Come to the Snow King’s Work Shop and help us light up the night on Feb.
10.
Championed by BC Hydro and the Town of Golden
2. MasqueParade Day Camp - Friday, Feb. 9
Friday, Feb. 9 is a school holiday and KHC is considering hosting a 9am to
3:30 pm MasqueParade Day Camp with a variety of MasqueParade activities
like lantern and masque making and dancing for school age children. Maggie
Calladine is our consultant and would help with the coordination of
activities.
There would be a reasonable fee charged for a limited number of students.
Please reply to this email or call 344-6186 ASAP and confirm your interest. If there is
sufficient interest from parents, we will confirm a GO on the Day Camp by Monday, Jan. 29.
3. Jam The Blues During ICE KICKS!
Stay tuned for more info about Bill Dowey and the Blues Devils' visit to
Golden on the Feb. 17 weekend. Bill and the boys will perform a hot night
of danceable blues on the saturday night. Then, on Sunday afternoon,
they'll host a blues jam where local musicians will be invited to join
them on stage and jam the blues. The rest of us can sit back, watch and
enjoy!
4. LIVE KICKS - Restless Lester at the Civic Centre, Friday, Feb. 2 at 7:30pm
- Doors at 7pm
Soulful singing, hot licks and great songs are what audiences have come to
expect from Alberta's Restless Lester. A fun-filled night for all lovers of
authentic country and bluegrass music.
Singing those country tinged 4-part harmonies and playing fiddle, guitar,
banjo and the upright bass these guys - and gal - really know how to put
on a great show covering some old country dancehall favourites like
Down In San Antone, Jeannie C. Riley's Good Morning Country Rain and even a cover of Elvis' Mystery Train.
Restless Lester is Steve Fisher on guitar, Brad Lindberg on banjo, Bruce Blair on fiddle and Tammy Fassaert on the upright bass. Tickets are now on sale at Moon River, EKE, Dollar Store and up on the hill at Kicking Horse General Store.
Thanks to Louisiana Pacific for Championing this performance!
5. Art Gallery of Golden - Grand Opening on Saturday, Feb. 3 - Cheryl
Bartram's "We've Come A Long Way, Baby?"
The final touches to the new space are - well - final and we're just about
ready to open on Saturday afternoon, Feb. 3 with Cheryl Bartram's exhibit:
A ceramic exploration of common advertising images of women from 1920
through 2000.
AGOG is located at 506 9th Avenue in beautiful downtown Golden. Doors open
on Saturday afternoon Feb. 3 at 3pm. The official ribbon cutting ceremony
is at 5pm with a meet-the-artist reception to follow until 7pm.
After that, AGOG is open Thursdays and Fridays from 3pm to 7pm and then on
Saturdays from 12 noon until 5pm.
"We've Come A Long Way, Baby?" will be on show until Feb. 21.
Thanks to Golden Photography's Legacy of Light Gallery for championing
this exhibit.
6. LIVE KICKS at Bacchus Books & Cafe - Cara Luft - Jan. 29 at 7pm
Tickets are now On Sale for the first concert in the new LIVE KICKS at
Bacchus series: Monday evening, January 29th with Cara Luft - co-founder
of The Wailing Jennys. Cara will be accompanied by Hugh McMillan on bass.
Hugh plays with Spirit of the West and was in town in November with James
Keelaghan wowing everybody with his wonderful fretless bass playing.
Note the early start time of 7pm - this way people can catch a bite in
town and get home at a reasonable hour on a dark winter's night.
Tickets are $20 but all the usual KHC Member Discounts apply. There are
only 50 spaces available so pick up your tickets now - ONLY at Bacchus
Books & Cafe. N.B. Members who buy in advance only pay $12.
Upcoming concerts in the series include Gordie Tentrees and a much
anticipated return visit by Kim Barlow.
7. Climate Change in the Canadian Columbia Basin - Tuesday, Jan 30 - 7pm at British Columbia Visitor Centre
KHC is a supporting a special free information session that Columbia Basin Trust has put together featuring expert climate change research scientists.
The message is clear: What we've seen in the past, isn't what we can expect in the future. What we can expect, they say, is warmer winters, drier summers, loss of glaciers, rising snow lines and more extreme weather events!
Go to www.cbt.org/water/ for more info.

Climate Change in the Canadian Columbia Basin - Tuesday, Jan 30 - 7pm at British Columbia Visitor Centre

The message is clear: What we've seen in the past, isn't what we can expect in the future. What we can expect, they say, is warmer winters, drier summers, loss of glaciers, rising snow lines and more extreme weather events!
