FEBRUARY
The BC Society Act: What All Not-For-Profit Organizations
Incorporated Under the Act Need to Know!
This session is designed to give societies incorporated under the BC
Society Act the practical knowledge, understanding, and tips they need
to keep their organizations in good standing with the Registrar of
Societies in BC.
It provides details on the recent changes to the BC Society Act and
registered society's obligations, which have important implications
for all registered societies. It also provides an overview of the
principles underlying the Act, how they are reflected in the Act, and
what these mean to registered societies on a day-to-day basis. Most
attendees are surprised by what they don't know about the Act, and the
simple things they can do to ensure they are always in compliance.
In many NPOs where knowledge about their obligations under the Act
comes and goes as staff and board members change, this type of
information and the comprehensive handout that comes with the
session
will be invaluable as an internal resource for years to come. The
session includes an up-to-date copy of the BC Society Act; something
which many NPOs neglect to acquire and refer to on a regular basis.
This session touches on the distinction and interrelationship between
registration under the BC Society Act and registration as a Charity
under the federal Income Tax Act.
Attendees at recent sessions said: "Fantastic! As usual with a lot of
clubs with volunteers, each person has a real life which can interfere
with club life, so the 'I's don't always get dotted. Now we know how
to organize the whole thing!" "Very informative and valuable!"
Something that all directors should attend".

How to Revise Your Constitution & Bylaws:
The Process, Issues, Tips
This session is for groups that are societies, charities, foundations,
and other types of not-for-profit organizations. If your group is
looking to revise these documents, or your group hasn’t done so within
the last 5 years, you won't want to miss this session.
This session outlines and reviews the process groups have to follow to
revise them, identifies and explains the minimum requirements that
constitutions and bylaws must include, and focuses on the additional
issues that many groups should address in these documents to make
them
the most useful for the operation of their organizations. It addresses
the relationship between policies and bylaws and how to use these two
devices to the advantage of the group. It also provides tips on how to
format these documents to make them as user-friendly as possible,
and
how to ensure every group is always using the most up-to-date
version.
Attendees at recent sessions said: "Excellent! Very well presented
and very comprehensive. Valuable information as usual, answered
specific issues, but provided plenty of general information. Very
useful!"

MARCH
How to Maintain Your Charity or Foundation:
The Process, Issues, Tips
This session is for societies and groups that are charities or
foundations. The process for maintaining charitable status is
straightforward in terms of requirements, but rife with potential
pitfalls. If charitable status is important to your group you won't
want to miss this session.
This session goes beyond the information provided by the Charities
Directorate, and available at the Directorate's 'Roadshow', to discuss
many of the issues that every charity needs to recognize and act on -
such as how seemingly simple changes to your group's purposes &
activities can inadvertently affect charitable status, why it can be
important to your group to give out as few tax receipts as possible,
and important things groups should and can do to protect their
charitable status.
Attendees at recent sessions said: "Very informative" "The details &
tips on how to fill out the Charity Information Form & issuing
charitable receipts were great!" "Excellent" "It wasn't fluffy - good,
well organized content" "Demystified the content & gave a framework
to
work from" "Answered my questions!" "I didn't realize how much I
didn't know!"

Records & Information Management, Access, and Privacy for Societies
and Charities (New!)
If a member of the media contacted your group and asked for a copy of
your 'financials' would you know what to do? What should you do if
you are subject to an FOI request because you submitted a proposal in
response to an RFP from a public institution? What information are
you required to keep on members, for how long, and who can have
access
to them? What about client information? Are you complying with the
privacy legislation that came into force in 2004?
This new course focuses on what all not-for-profits need to know about
the records and information they must and should keep, and what they
need to know about management of and access to that information.
This
is an important topic that many societies and charities find
challenging.
This session includes a comprehensive handout and will cover:
*
What records must and should be kept by incorporated societies and
by
registered charities
*
What records are available to the public from the Society Registry
and from the Charities Directorate
*
The Personal Information Protection Act and how to apply it
*
The Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act, and how it
can impact societies and charities
*
Responsibilities and rights of societies and charities to acquire,
manage and protect information, and other factors to consider
*
Rights of the organization's internal groups - members, directors,
volunteers, employees – and external groups – donors, funders,
media,
government, and the public - to access information
*
What to do if your organization is asked for financial information,
membership lists, board and AGM minutes, confidential minutes,
employee records, contracts, etc.
*
Appropriate bylaws and policies to address these issues
*
Other important considerations - training, privacy officer, etc.
*
And more!
