Welcome to NEWS KICKS Vol. 3 - #14
1. LIVE KICKS - Restless Lester at the Civic Centre, this Friday night, Feb.
2 at 7:30pm - Doors at 7pm
Get your tickets now for a fun-filled night for all lovers of authentic
country and bluegrass music this Friday night at the Civic Centre.
Soulful singing, hot licks and great songs are what audiences have come to
expect from Alberta's Restless Lester. Singing country tinged 4-part
harmonies and playing fiddle, guitar, banjo and the upright bass these
guys - and gal - really know how to put on a great show covering some old
country dancehall favourites like Down In San Antone, Jeannie C. Riley's Good Morning Country Rain and even a cover of Elvis' Mystery Train.
Tickets are now on sale at Moon River, EKE, Dollar Store and up on the
hill at Kicking Horse General Store. Thanks to Louisiana Pacific for Championing this performance!
2. Art Gallery of Golden - Grand Opening this Saturday, Feb. 3 - Cheryl
Bartram's "We've Come A Long Way Baby?"
Kicking Horse Culture's Art Gallery of Golden opens this Saturday
afternoon, Feb. 3 with Cheryl Bartram's exhibit: A ceramic exploration of
common advertising images of women from 1920 through 2000.
It's been a long-time dream to have a dedicated gallery space
"downtown" and that dream has just come true thanks to the
dedicated efforts of many volunteers. An advisory panel of visual artists
has been meeting since September. They identified a dedicated public art
gallery space as their highest priority and when serendipity came knocking
with the availability of 506 9th Ave., we jumped on it. Just a few short
months later and much effort, we're all AGOG at the transformation!
Heading up the construction work was David Low - David doesn't want the
limelight but give him a big hug nonetheless! He put in the long hours and
it shows! Thanks to Matt Kinzel who assisted.
Nelli Tobler led the paint brigade of Jane Tevelein Doel, Shelagh O'Brien,
Wayne Manzer and Thelma Brown. Bill Pitcher was always available with his
expertise and a guiding word and his print work for the gallery signs is
beautiful.
We'd like to thank Jeff Palumbo for the donation of some lovely Douglas
Fir and to Frank Young of Golden Installations for his good humour and
patience with our lighting needs.
The doors open this Saturday afternoon Feb. 3 at 3pm. The official ribbon
cutting ceremony is at 5pm with a meet-the-artist reception to follow
until 7pm. Mayor Jim Doyle and MLA Norm Macdonald will be on hand to offer
good wishes.
After that, AGOG is open Thursdays and Fridays from 3pm to 7pm and then on
Saturdays from 12 noon until 5pm. "We've Come A Long Way, Baby?"will be on show until Feb. 21.
Thanks to Golden Photography's Legacy of Light Gallery for Championing
this exhibit.
3. THE SNOW KING'S WORK SHOP IS BUZZING!
Last Saturday, more than three dozen folks - all ages - were busily
working away in the Work Shop building lanterns, masques, and even a large
Métis canoe and a snow machine lantern for the MasqueParade on Feb. 10.
Simon D'Amour of West Canada Films is documenting the creative process of
the MasqueParade. Simon's doing a wonderful job! For an online sneak peak
of what's happening in the Snow King's Work Shop click here
http://www.westcanadafilm.com/ then pull down on the "Films" menu tab and select "Kicking Horse Culture". Thanks Simon!
4. MasqueParade UPCOMING SCHEDULE
Folks are asking when they can come to the Snow King's Work Shop (at the Museum) and they want more info on what's happening on the final week and a half of the
MasqueParade. Go to our website or click http://www.kickinghorseculture.ca/images/KHC-MasqueParade-Schedule.jpg for a detailed view of dates, times and locations.
It’s FREE to be a MasqueParader and take part in the Pageant and the
night of dancing and spectacle at the Civic Centre. Create a lantern, a
masque or simply "dress up" like the old days and come out to
the Pageant and MasqueParade with us. Elders are especially welcome to
come enjoy the sights and sounds of the festivities.
Championed by BC Hydro and the Town of Golden
5. MasqueParade DAY CAMP - Friday, Feb. 9
Friday, Feb. 9 is a school holiday and KHC is considering hosting a 9am to
3:30 pm MasqueParade Day Camp with a variety of MasqueParade activities
like lantern and masque making and dancing for school age children. Maggie
Calladine is our consultant and will help with the coordination of
activities.
There's a fee of $25 for a limited number of students ages 7 and up.
Please, email or call 344-6186 ASAP and confirm your interest. If there is
sufficient interest from parents, we will confirm a GO on the Day Camp by
the end of this week.
6. JAM THE BLUES DURING ICE KICKS!
Stay tuned for more info about Bill Dowey and the Blues Devils' visit to
Golden on the Feb. 17 weekend. Bill and the boys will perform a hot night
of danceable blues on the Saturday night. Then, on Sunday afternoon,
they'll host a blues jam where local musicians will be invited to join
them on stage and jam the blues. The rest of us can sit back, watch and
enjoy!
The 'Open Mic' Blues Jam is open to all musicians. Sign-up is at 1:45pm
and the Jam will kick-off at 2pm and run to 3:30pm. Bring a song, bring
your instrument (and amp if necessary)
7. OUR NEW WEB SITE LOOK
