(BURNABY, BC) - Opening July 10 and running through to August 26 the
Burnaby Art Gallery is proud to present Marianna Schmidt: Selected
Prints and Drawings - an exhibition which chronicles the self-reflective
graphic work by one of Vancouver's most expressive Modernists.=20

Born in Hungary in 1918, Marianna Schmidt lived and worked in Vancouver,
BC from the mid-1950s to 2005. The exhibition includes a beautiful 80
page book on the artist in which Robin Laurence writes, "On occasion,
Schmidt said her life was irrelevant to her art, but she also said, more
frequently and more adamantly, that 'You are formed by circumstances.'
Certainly, this is the position for which her art argues. It is almost
impossible to see her imagery without casting over it the light-and
shadow-of personal history."

As a student at the Vancouver School of art, Schmidt sought inspiration
for her early prints and drawings from many well known European artists
including Dubeffet, Picasso and Miro. She emerged onto the Vancouver art
scene during the 1960s winning numerous awards for her intricate and
expressionistic streetscapes. Conscious of the ever-changing art world,
Schmidt adapted and responded to its developments over the next 40
years. Selected Prints and Drawings examines etchings, lithographs,
drawings and Xerographs by the late artist in an exhibition that shows
these works as inter-related, forming part of a continuum of expression
based on the life and experiences of Schmidt. Part of a three gallery
retrospective; concurrent Marianna Schmidt exhibitions are being shown
at the SFU Teck Gallery in Vancouver and the Evergreen Cultural Centre
in Coquitlam.=20

The Burnaby Art Gallery will be holding an opening reception on Sunday,
July 15 from 1-3 p.m. followed by the opening reception at Evergreen
Cultural Centre on from 4-5:30 p.m.

The Burnaby Art Gallery located at 6344 Deer Lake Avenue and is open
Tuesday to Friday from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday from
12 to 5 p.m. Summer hours: Thursday evenings, June-August until 8 p.m.
