WELLS, BC, July 10, 2007…. Island Mountain Arts in Wells, BC is pleased
to announce a *contest to win one of three scholarships to the
Songwriting and Spoken Word Poetry Musical Day Camp for 6 – 18 year olds
from July 31 – August 3 with Corwin Fox, Kia Kadiri and Sarah Noni Metzner*.
This unique course focuses on both *writing and performance* and will
teach students how to get comfortable in the rhythm of song and spoken
word. Splitting into different age groups, students will learn *musical
theory, improvisation and lyric-writing*, plus Corwin Fox will be
bringing his mobile recording unit so students can learn *how to record*
their new songs and rhymes. Students in the workshop will also have the
opportunity to perform on the last evening of class at the Sunset
Theatre as part of the Opening of the ArtsWells Festival.
Professional BC musicians Corwin Fox, Kia Kadiri and Sarah Noni Metzner
each bring their own musical perspectives to the program, providing
young people with a diverse learning experience aimed at facilitating
self-expression.
*Corwin Fox* is a musician, producer and co-founder of Coqi Records out
of Victoria, BC. Originally from Ottawa, he has been playing and
performing for over fifteen years and is a regular at the Smither's
Guitar Camp and the Power of Hope in Victoria where he teaches music to
young people.
*Kia Kadiri* returns to Island Mountain Arts to teach the spoken word
portion of the workshop. An accomplished and well-known musician in the
BC Hip Hop scene, Kadiri has the artistic depth, vocal skills, dynamic
stage presence and universal message to inspire wherever she goes. She
has spent much of the last year touring to high schools to inspire young
people through Hip Hop music.
*Sarah Noni Metzner* has just released her second album Daybreak
Mourning on Dog My Cat Records and has spent much of the last year
touring across North America. Her unique performance fuses folk with
blues, cabaret, slam poetry, live loops, bluegrass, funk and jazz,
steeping audiences in a rhythmical and powerful art form. She has worked
alongside Corwin Fox at the Power of Hope, teaching young people about
songwriting.
All three of these talented musicians will be performing at the
ArtsWells Festival, which begins on Friday, August 3rd (the last day of
class), as well as at an instructor concert that is free for students at
the Sunset Theatre on July 31st at 7:30pm.
