Corwin Fox is a musician, producer and co-founder of Coqi Records out of
Victoria, BC. Originally from Ottawa,
he has been playing and performing for over fifteen years and is a
regular at the Smither's Guitar Camp and the
Power of Hope in Victoria where he teaches music to young people.
Sarah Noni Metzner <ww.sarahmetzner.com%22>
Sarah Noni Metzner has just released her second album Daybreak Mourning
on Dog My Cat Records and has spent much of the last year touring across
North America.
Her unique performance fuses folk with blues, cabaret, slam poetry, live
loops, bluegrass, funk and jazz, steeping audiences in a rhythmical and
powerful art form.
She has worked alongside Corwin Fox at the Power of Hope, teaching young
people about songwriting.
Kia Kadiri <ww.myspace.com/kiakadiri%22>
Kia Kadiri returns to Island Mountain Arts to teach the spoken word
portion of the workshop.
An accomplished and well-known musician in the BC Hip Hop scene, Kadiri
has the artistic depth, vocal skills, dynamic stage presence and
universal message to inspire wherever she goes.
She has spent much of the last year touring to high schools to inspire
young people through Hip Hop music.
Course Description:
This unique course focuses on both writing and performance and will
teach students how to get comfortable in the rhythm of song and spoken
word. Splitting into different age groups, students will learn musical
theory, improvisation and lyric-writing, plus Corwin Fox will be
bringing his mobile recording unit so students can learn how to record
their new songs and rhymes. Students in the workshop will also have the
opportunity to perform on the last evening of class at the Sunset
Theatre as part of the Opening of the ArtsWells Festival. Professional
BC musicians Corwin Fox, Kia Kadiri and Sarah Noni Metzner each bring
their own musical perspectives to the program, providing young people
with a diverse learning experience aimed at facilitating self-expression.
Special Events For Students:
1) Monday, July 30th, 7pm - Welcome Reception for Students and Instructors
Taking place at the IMA Gallery, this is an opportunity for students to
meet their instructors, have a breif orientation and receive their
student information packages and nametags. Light snacks and beverages
will be served.
2) Tuesday, July 31st, 5:30pm - Student & Instructor BBQ
Taking place on the patio of the IMA Gallery, students and instructors
will be served a free BBQ dinner (veggie options available). Guests can
eat for $5.
3) Tuesday, July 31st, 7:30pm - Concert with Corwin Fox, Kia Kadiri and
Sarah Noni Metzner
This concert at the Sunset Theatre will feature performances by Corwin
Fox, Kia Kadiri and Sarah Noni Metzner, giving participants an
opportunity to expereince the talents of their instructors, as well as
giving the public an opportunity to attend an evening of professional
performances. The concert is free for students and $10 for the public.
4) Friday, August 3rd, 6 - 8pm - Student Performances and ArtsWells
Festival Kick Off
The students will perform as part of the opening of the 2007 ArtsWells
Festival. This event, at the historic Sunset Theatre will provide an
opportunity for students to perform for their peers and public. In past
years the students have also been joined by the instructors on stage
providing a memorable and life changing experience.
5) Friday, August 3rd - Monday, August 6: 4th Annual ArtsWells Festival
The 2007 Artswells Festival of All Things Art features 4-days of more
than 40 musical acts, art and music workshops, fun activities for kids,
and the 8th Annual One Minute Play Festival. Tickets are $40 for Adults,
$20 for Youth Ages 13 - 18 and free for 12 and under. Day passes also
available.
