And we've been busy moving humidity sensitive collections from the
Langley Centennial Museum which is in Fort Langley to safer quarters all
week long. Our issue is not with water in the building because we are on
high ground but rather if they have to evacuate the Village of Fort
Langley, a site bounded by the river on the north and flood plain all
around. Water, sewer, septic and even a considerable amount of
electrical service comes into the Village under ground and thus thru
that floodplain.  We've been told we'll have to leave if we lose power.
Our colleagues in Surrey have graciously loaned us storage space for
textiles, archival materials baskets and our fine art is elsewhere, too.
We've been packing and moving all week. 

Here's hoping the dikes hold. If not, the Gulf of Georgia Cannery is
going to be one busy place!!

My heart goes out to our friends in K'san. Our situation is nothing
compared to theirs.

The Delta Museum and Archives is also on flood watch.  Though the threat
of
flooding is low, we must of course prepare for the worst.  Like
Richmond,
our concern is high tides coinciding with high river levels.  In
addition,
sustained pressure on the dykes is a concern.  Today we are moving our
ground level Archives storage to off site premises so that all hands may
be
on deck to move artifacts from the lower level of the Museum to the
second
and third floors if and when required.

Also at some degree of threat are Richmond's two National Historic
Sites,
the Gulf of Georgia Cannery and Britannia Shipyard.  Both sites are
located
outside of and below the level of Richmond's dykes, meaning that we
could
be awash, while Richmond itself remains dry.  Our situation is
complicated
by the fact that it is not only the freshet which we must watch, but
also
the tides.  If the peak flow coincides with the high tides from the new
moon, we could be in serious trouble.  We will be placing our volunteers
on
'standby', to be ready for a sudden, urgent call to move materials and
electronics equipment up off the floor.

The Chilliwack Museum and Archives may find itself in a similar
situation
to K'san later this week. In particular, our archives and object storage
area are in the flood plain, although protected by dikes at this point.
We
have made arrangements to move our entire collection to higher ground
(at a
minimum cost of $10,000 and up to $45,000) but have not yet made the
decision to move. We are in close touch with our City's emergency
planners.
Right now it looks like the rain situation that is developing could
worsen
the situation up north, and within 3 to 5 days, down south. We have
already
moved some of our archives to a safer storage area and are packing some
material to make a move easier.


We have checked with our insurance company. We have no coverage for
preventative measures. If there is a flood, we have a $10,000
deductible.
That is small comfort though. Saving our collection is our highest
priority.


Chilliwack's dikes are susceptible to over-topping. If a flood warning
is
issued we will likely move. The move will take us 3 to 5 days. We
obviously
hope that we will not find our ourselves in a flood situation. But, our
entire community is planning. Many hours have already been spent by our
staff on the planning process and packing and moving some of our
collection.
