National Aboriginal Day Celebration

Thursday, June 21, 2007, 4:00 pm

In honor of National Aboriginal Day, the Dancers of Damelahamid present Gilo
Hyte, "Sharing the Spirit." These masked dances, stories, and songs belong
to Simoiget Hagbegwatku from the royal Dakhumhast House of the Gitksan
Nation. "Gilo Hyte" revives seven songs based on historical audio recordings
of the Adaawk belonging to Simoiget Hagbegwatku, made in the 1950s by his
mother Irene Harris and uncle Arthur McDames. The knowledge contained on
these recordings predates the potlatch ban of 1885, and preserves these
stories and songs in their pre-contact form. MOA and the Dakhumhast House
welcome you to witness the first public presentation of these songs in more
than a century, and to share in a truly historic cultural event.

Michael Nicoll Yahgulanaas - Meddling in the Museum

Opening celebration, Tuesday, July 10, 7:00 pm (everyone welcome)

Haida artist Michael Nicoll Yahgulanaas mixes it up at MOA with three
site-specific installations inspired by the Museum's current Renewal
Project.  Michael's new works incorporate media as diverse as a
stolen-but-recovered car hoods and copper leaf (Coppers from the Hood),
argillite dust and an entire canoe-bearing Pontiac Firefly (Pedal to the
Meddle), and an interactive Haida manga mural using abandoned archaeology
storage trays (Bone Box). In the process, he brings his own brand of humour,
narrative, and social commentary to jumpstart new debates in the Museum's
changing spaces. 

The July 10 opening will take place "tailgate style" on the Museum grounds,
with a picnic and music by two fantastic local bands - Jamie Thomson and the
Culturally Modified and Sister Says.

Installations curated by Karen Duffek, Curator, Contemporary Visual Arts.

The Village is Tilting: Dancing AIDS in Malawi

February 6 - September 3, 2007, Gallery 10

The Village is Tilting: Dancing AIDS in Malawi incorporates a series of
powerful masks, life-size photographs, video interviews in Chichewa (with
English subtitles), and dance footage to document the depth of awareness and
cultural response to the AIDS pandemic by rural Malawians. 

"A Partnership of Peoples" Exhibit

The Museum has recently embarked upon a major Renewal Project known as "A
Partnership of Peoples" (for details, see <blocked::file:///C:/Documents
and Settings/jwebb/Local Settings/Temporary Internet
Files/OLK790/www.moa.ubc.ca/renewal> www.moa.ubc.ca/renewal). In this
exhibit, MOA displays its plans for expansion and renovation, a scale model,
and samples of architectural details, finishings, and furnishings. We also
open a window onto our Digitization Studio, in which real, live
photographers are using state-of-the-art digital cameras and high-speed
computers to capture high resolution images of the collections throughout
the day.

Museum and Shop Hours:

Summer: (through October 8, 2007) Daily 10 to 5 pm; Tuesdays 5 to 9 pm pay
as you can. Winter:  (from October 9, 2007). Closed Mondays. Tuesdays 11 am
to 9 pm (Tuesdays 5 pm to 9 pm pay as you can). Open Wed - Sun 11 am to 5
pm.

Admission:

$9 Adults; $7 Students & Seniors 65+ (UBC staff, students, and faculty free
with ID). Tuesdays 5 pm to 9 pm pay as you can (suggested $5 per person,
including groups). Family $25; children under 6 free. VUEguide rental: $5.00
