C.D. Hoy Photography Exhibit set to open at Quesnel Museum=20

Quesnel - The Quesnel & District Museum and Archives in collaboration
with Barkerville Historic Town is pleased to announce the opening of an
exhibit of photographs by renowned Quesnel photographer C.D. Hoy (1883 -
1973) on Thursday, June 21 at 7 p.m.=20

Hoy captured the early 20th Centuries unique character and cultural
milieu of Cariboo preserved in 1,500 portraits of people who lived in
and around Quesnel. Acclaimed as the first town photographer, Hoy's
patrons included people from the entire community, Chinese, Caucasian
and First Nations and give insights into the culturally diverse
landscape of Northern British Columbia.=20

"This exhibit will feature one of the gems of our cultural heritage,"
said Mayor Nate Bello. "To celebrate artistic talent, cultural diversity
and the unique history of our region in one exhibit is a great
accomplishment for our museum."=20

"Quesnel's Museum and Heritage Commission continues to work towards
encouraging more culturally inclusive programming in our local museum,"
said Commission Chair Lorna Townsend. "The C.D. Hoy photo exhibit is a
superb anchor for showcasing our Chinese culture and heritage. We thank
the staff and volunteers for their efforts in creating this outstanding
exhibit for our facility."=20

"Barkerville is proud to partner with the City of Quesnel and the Museum
Commission on this exciting exhibit," said Curator Bill Quackenbush.
"Our communities are linked by a shared history that this exhibit
personifies. Hoy continued to do business in both Barkerville and Wells
throughout his life. It is to the betterment of us all to continue to
develop and promote the links that Hoy was so much a part."=20

Hoy's work speaks to the frontier spirit, camaraderie and sense of
kinship of the people of Cariboo, from photographs of families and
groups of friends to portraits capturing individuals. The exhibit
features 46 images from First Son: Portraits by C.D. Hoy, as Curated by
Faith Moosang, printed by Henri Robideau and framed by Barkerville
Historic Town. These prints toured Canada and the U. S. between 1999 and
2005, including such prestigious museums as: the Canadian Museum of
Civilization, the McCord Museum of Canadian History and the Seattle Art
Museum. One quarter of a million people all agree - they are fabulous.=20

This new addition to the permanent displays at the Quesnel Museum, a
partnership between Barkerville Historic Town and the City of Quesnel,
allows us to celebrate the contributions of Hoy and the many residents
captured by his lens. Hoy began taking portraits in Barkerville around
1910 but soon opened the C.D. Hoy and Company Dry Goods Store in Quesnel
becoming a prominent citizen and businessman. There, he set up camera
and darkroom and continued to build this incredible window into our
past. His contributions as photographer for the diverse people of the
Cariboo is deserving of the highest recognition both in the beauty they
present in Hoy as an artist, and in the story that only a photograph can
tell - surely worth more than a thousand words and a legacy for all
Canadians.=20
