Wearing Traditions

The West Vancouver Museum, in partnership with the Squamish Nation, is =
offering a rare opportunity for the public to enjoy the rich clothing =
traditions of the local First Nations people through traditional dance =
and contemporary fashion. Wearing Traditions: Ets7utsis telh =
tim'=E1-chet takes place on July 28th at the West Vancouver Museum from =
1 pm. =20

This summer, the Museum has invited a Squamish dance group Sna7'hm and a =
contemporary First Nations fashion designer Pam Baker to share cultural =
knowledge, artistic expression and contemporary vision.=20

=20

The Sna7'hm dance group (Skxwe7mesh Squamish Nation), formed in 2003, =
brings Squamish family histories, songs, legends and dances to life with =
their energetic performances. The name Sna7'hm is derived from the =
Squamish word that represents the power, strength and energy that =
emanates from the Thunderbird. Members of Sna7'hm range in age from 4 to =
65 and perform dances that have been handed down through the =
generations.=20

=20

Pam Baker is a celebrated fashion designer who blends traditional =
aboriginal designs into her contemporary clothing. Her company "Touch of =
Culture" centres on the principle of providing people with the =
opportunity to explore how modern style can be blended with traditional =
symbols. A lively fashion show of Pam Baker's design will be accompanied =
by drumming and singing by William Nahanee of the Squamish Nation.=20

Enjoy watching a demonstration of cedar weaving by Tracy Williams and =
visit the Museum's current exhibition of contemporary and historic Coast =
Salish treasures. There will be special shopping opportunities to =
purchase directly from some First Nations artists.
