Kings and the Agency of Calligraphy in Ming China'

Lecture by Dr. Craig Clunas, 

School of Oriental & African Studies, London

Craig Clunas worked for 15 years as a member of the curatorial staff of the
Victoria and Albert Museum, London, where in addition to researching and
publishing the Chinese collections, he was responsible for the installation
of the new galleries of Chinese art. He left the V&A in 1994 to take up a
post in the history of Chinese art at Sussex University, where he also
served as curator of the University's Barlow Collection of Chinese Ceramics,
Jades, and Bronzes. In spring of 203 he was appointed to the Percival David
Chair in the Department of Art & Archaeology at SOAS. He has held visiting
positions and fellowships at the University of Chicago and the Centre for
Studies in Landscape Architecture, Dunbarton Oaks, Washington, D.C., and
also holds prizes from the Iris Foundation and the Oriental Ceramic Society
for his contribution to the study of Chinese art.

Dr. Clunas' special interests include material and visual culture of China
ca 1200, especially the Ming Period (1368-1644); Chinese jade, furniture and
lacquer; the idea of 'early modernity' as a global and not just a European
phenomenon; art of China in the 20th century, particularly issues of
national identity and modernity; history of collection and museology;
historiography of Asian Art in Europe and America.
