“Deterrent” by Heather Thomas
Opening Reception: Friday, May 18th from 7pm-9pm

In the Nanaimo Art Gallery – Uptown’s latest exhibition, Victoria
artist, Heather Thomas, focuses on the notion of conflict and the use of
language in historical and current conflicts of war. This exhibition
runs from May 18^th to June 9^th , 2007

Her powerful works encompass the use of discarded crutches, cast lead
hand grenades, and floor to ceiling screen printed editions of armaments.
The work further provides a meaningful contrast between the natural
world, which regenerates life, and the manufactured objects of the
industrial and technological world, whose objective is to destroy life.

Thomas poses the thought – provoking question, “if hundreds of billions
of dollars worth of weapons provide security, why are “free” nations
steeped so deeply in fear?”

Nanaimo Art Gallery Curator, Gregory Ball defines Thomas’ “theatre of
war” installation as allowing the viewer to ponder their own opinions
and judgments in reference to the existing condition of nations caught
in conflict and the extent that national security is mobilized against
internal and external violence.

Opening reception and an opportunity to meet the artist is on Friday,
May 18^th ,
7.00 – 9:00 pm.
