The Hudson’s Hope Museum received funding for the 2 positions requested
– one for 13 weeks for a digitization project and one for 9 weeks for
expansion of our Aboriginal display and collection. I had to turn the
digitization one down as I already have funding through YCW for that. I
am also receiving funding through the North East Native Advancing
Society (NENAS) for a student of Aboriginal descent to work on the
expansion of the display and educational programming. Our local library
also received funding from Service Canada for a student this year – they
didn’t get it last year. It would be interesting to see how we scored
on the point system.
Maybe because we are a small isolated rural community helped though the
unemployment rate in NE BC is low at present due to oil & gas activity.
I know Service Canada was emphasizing the need for museums and libraries
to develop new initiatives in order to receive funding. They no longer
want to support the day to day activities or established things like the
Summer Reading Programs with student funded labour. The work needs to
be more career orientated and innovative.
I’m sorry for those of you who have not received funding but maybe there
is money available through other government agencies in your area that
support Aboriginal/ethnic minority employment or people with
disabilities or “Priority” students as Service Canada terms it..
