Press Release

Chilliwack Museum and Archives unveils new website

The website for the Chilliwack Museum and Archives was recently redesigned
by Heritage Records Manager, Shannon Anderson, to accommodate new on-line
features. The site now allows users to search the photograph and object
databases with one simple click of the mouse. The archives and map databases
will be added in the future.

Heritage Objects Manager Paul Ferguson said that the staff had researched
the best and most economical way of creating greater on-line access to the
collection. "One program seemed to fill all of our needs," he said, and
"that was a program called Past Perfect." The program was developed through
the American Association of State and Local History and is used by hundreds
of museums and archives in that country.

Museum and Archives Director, Ron Denman, said that, "Our institution is the
first in Canada to use Past Perfect to create an on-line catalogue." He
added, "What we have found is that our users generally do not distinguish
between our different collections. They want the ease of one button searches
and Past Perfect allows for that."

Denman added that the site is already proving to be of great interest to the
community. The threat of major Fraser River flooding this year has prompted
emergency measures people as well as the general public to search for
information and photographs of previous floods. The new site makes the
visual record easily available, Denman said.
