Sarah Metzner Sings Up a Storm at AGSO, Penticton
The powerful voice and engaging presence of Sarah Noni Metzner will
suffuse the main gallery at 7 pm, Saturday, May 26, at the Art Gallery
of the South Okanagan, 199 Marina Way, Penticton, BC.
With a growing presence in Canada's eclectic music scene, Sarah
Noni
Metzner is one of those rare artists who will encompass an entire
modern world full of emotion while often bleeding prophetic
revolution. A welcomed addition to Harry Manx's independent label,
Dog
My Cat Records, this energetic performer is turning heads with her
songs, her path-blazing fusion of genres, and her wildly memorable
live shows. Equally adept on guitar and piano alongside stunning
vocals, she paints unbound sonic portraits whilst having the ability
to satisfy any poet's soul with raw, multi-layered lyrics. Sarah's
unique performance fuses folk with blues, cabaret, slam poetry, live
loops, bluegrass, funk and jazz; steeping audiences in a rhythmic and
powerful art form.
Originally from the West Coast, Sarah has toured Canada extensively,
as well as making multiple trips throughout the US. Along the road
she's shared stages and sometimes collaborated with well known
Canadian artists such as Harry Manx, Ember Swift, CR Avery, Mr.
Something Something, Lisa Patterson, the Shiftless Rounders, Ridley
Bent, Rae Spoon, and more. She has been showcased at the West
Coast
Music Festival, the Kispiox Valley Music Festival, the Grand Forks
Festival of Freedom, and the ArtsWells Festival. In 2003, Sarah was
sponsored by the Friends of Clayoquot Sound, and hit the road for 2
months with a multi-media music and film presentation, raising
awareness for environmental activism about the endangered old
growth
forest in the Northwest. Sarah has since brought her compositions and
stylings to several independent films, and continues to expand her
love of multi-media art.
Now with the release of Daybreak Mourning, her second album for Dog
My
Cat Records, Sarah has taken a giant leap in her songwriting, bringing
the listener on a wild journey through duality and the places
in-between. Produced by hip-hop folk icon, Corwin Fox, the album
captures the indescribable energy that is her live show.
With subject matter running the gamut from love and politics, to
addiction and feminism, Sarah's songwriting poetics are evocative,
image-laden creations which take listeners into their own inner
recesses. Her songs seek a greater understanding of the human heart
and process, sharing the wisdom thusly gained.
Both Sarah's new release and her debut album (Something Beautiful -
2005) are being well received nationwide by fans and media alike.
Something Beautiful's title track was a finalist for the Peacedriven
Songwriting Award. Sarah Noni Metzner is one performer not to be
missed.
