Hello there,

I guess our organization is one of the lucky ones when it came to summer =
student funding. We did not qualify for YCW but got 2 positions through =
CSJ. But I am thrilled that we can offer summer programming. (I did make =
our application online. Not sure if that made a difference).

Maybe the point system worked in our favour since we are rural. One of =
the things that struck me about the point system was the points for =
events (once every 4 years versus annual event, etc). Will that mean =
that we museums can expect no students in 2010 with the Olympics and =
manpower they need for the event?

Insufficient student funding is a problem but there's a bigger issue at =
stake. It appears that cultural institutions are heavily reliant on =
summer students to keep their doors open to the public. We need to be =
talking about sustainable funding for museums with all levels of =
government. There is no way a single-employee institution like ours can =
offer much without student funding. All my volunteers are 70+.

The province is promoting tourism in a big way. Maybe we can try and get =
some funding through the provincial government as well.

(Just so it's clear since people are talking of approaching their MLAs, =
the CSJ and YCW programs are federal and we should be talking to our MPs =
about it.)

Sincerely,
Rashmi Narayan
