New Westminster Museum and Archives had received approval for a YCW -
Archives grant for 1 student as requested. =20

Today (May 22) I phoned to ask what the status was of our application
for 1 museum student that we had requested and was told we did not make
the cut. Later today we received a letter saying that YCW in Heritage
Organizations "... are currently unable to provide financial support for
your project.  In the event that additional funding resources become
available for the YCW 2007 Program, we will be contacting your
organization. ..."

We did not apply for any other summer student programs this year.=20

Well I put in my twenty minutes: the 1-800 number gets you to someone
who has no idea what you are talking about.  I was also referred to
Susan Murdoch who was in a meeting and then to Kent O'Connor who was
pleasantly patronizing, and kept saying that the $5 million that is
supposed to help museums is not to compensate for the HRDC cuts (I'm
sure someone said that the $5 million was specifically to compensate for
the HRDC cuts) but is just to help us out, but they have not decided
when, and it will be going through the YCW program at CMA.

As for HRDC, the Minister of Veteran's Affairs (no idea why him)
announced last week that all the organizations across the country that
have been cut will be funded.  Odd that no one has followed up on that
with an announcement.  I think the government is falling apart.

Thanks for your suggestion regarding phoning Minister Oda and the PM,
Lee Boyko.  I tried phoning on Victoria Day when I wasn't working
myself.

Neither number you gave will afford an opportunity to leave a message
after hours unless a 'mailbox number' is supplied. =20

I had none.

This morning, at 11am Ottawa time, I tried Minister Oda's phone number.
I was redirected to a gentleman who redirected me to Lyn Elliot Sherwood
(819 997 7774) who is, apparently "in charge of museums", and thence, as
she was not in her office, to Susan Murdoch (997 8756) who was not in
her office either and whose answering machine clicked off as I started
to speak.  The process took twenty minutes.=20

There is a toll free number: 1 800 720 0994.  Ask for the local 819 or
ask to speak to Lyn (Elliot) Sherwood... My receptionist found her name
listed under Sherwood, not Elliot.=20
