Canada Summer Jobs Update
*Ottawa, May 23, 2007 —* The federal government seems ready to make
quick changes to the much critized Canada Summer Jobs program; CMA is
pleased that the government is reconsidering the program criteria.
Yesterday, the Halifax Chronicle Herald reported that Service Canada
will be contacting not-for-profit organizations that were denied funding
under the Canada Summer Jobs program.
The Honourable Monte Solberg, Minister for Human Resources and Social
Development Canada (HRSDC), was quoted in the Herald stating: "We're
trying to respond to concerns of groups that were initially denied
funding. We're going to touch base with every group that didn't [get
funding] in the first round and say that we're open to providing them
with funding where they're providing important services or would
experience hardship because they didn't get the funding."
Following a meeting he attended with HRSDC officials, Paul Zed, MP
(Saint-John), stated that he understood "that all not-for-profits that
requested funding will receive it."
CMA has requested a meeting with Mr. Solberg, and remains on top of the
situation. CMA encourages you to contact your MP on how the changes to
the Canada Summer Jobs program have affected your museum.
