COMMUNITY PROGRAM
Tickets for the Delta Museum and Archives’s Fraser River Delta
Historical Cruises are going fast! The tours are set for Saturdays June
9^th and 16^th 2007. These five-hour cruises depart from the Ladner area
at 10 a.m.
This year, the tours will venture up-river exploring the busy South Arm
of the Fraser River. En route, we will pass by many interesting
settings, including Deas Island, Sunbury, Annieville and Gunderson
Slough. Along the way, participants enjoy stories of Delta’s early
settlers and the growth of the communities along the river.
The history of the settlement along the Fraser River delta is a
multicultural story. It begins with the First Nations people who
expertly fished on the river for thousands of years before the first
Europeans arrived. The European settlement of the Fraser River Delta
began 51 years after Simon Fraser’s historic journey in 1808. People
poured in from many parts of the world, first to chase gold during the
Gold Rush and then to make a living in the fishing and farming
communities that soon developed along the mighty Fraser River.
During the Fraser River Historical Cruises, participants will hear about
the Greek houseboat community at Deas Island Slough, and Scandinavian,
Japanese, Chinese communities in North Delta and Ladner that all
contributed to the growing fishing and canning industries on the Fraser
River.
Outside seating on the bow of the yacht will afford participants a
spectacular view of the activity on the river. Bring along your cameras
and dress for the weather. Bring a lunch. Hot and cold beverages are
provided. Pre-registration and pre-payment are required. Cost:
$35.00/person. Space is limited.
