Subject: Quest for Artefacts attributed to Captain William MacKenzie

Dear British Columbia Museums Association,

I am researching the history of Captain William MacKenzie. He was born
in Scotland in 1788, served in the British Army and later founded the
settlement of MacKenzie Corner in Carleton County, New Brunswick where
he died in 1861. I have been trying to locate artefacts and/or documents
such as letters or diaries that belonged to him.

Two weeks ago, I spoke with a descendant who stated that Captain
MacKenzie's Waterloo Medal was believed to be in a museum collection in
British Columbia. Apparently, a relative from New Brunswick had visited
British Columbia some years ago and had seen the medal in a museum
collection. This family member actually sketched the medal as he did not
have access to a camera. Unfortunately, this gentleman is now deceased
and the family does not know when he made his visit or what museum he
visited. I suspect that the museum was in the Vancouver area as one
branch of his family, the Kennedy's, had settled in Vancouver. The medal
should be named to William MacKenzie, 52nd Regiment of Foot or something
similar.

I have asked the curators at the Royal British Columbia Museum, the
Vancouver Museum and the Museum of Anthropology at UBC about this and
none of them have the medal in their collection. I was wondering if his
Waterloo Medal, and perhaps other artefacts, might be in the collection
of one of the smaller museums that are part of your association?

Does your association have a newsletter or group email distribution list
that a notice of my search could be published in? If so, I would
certainly appreciate your assistance with my quest. Any information that
I receive would be shared with the family in the Woodstock, NB area and
the Carleton County Historical Society

All the best,

Gary Campbell
