The Touring Reel Youth Film Festival Arrives in Kelowna October 19

KELOWNA, BC - Films made by Okanagan area youth will be screened at =20
the Reel Youth Film Festival on October 19 at the Alternator Gallery =20
for Contemporary Art. The screening will feature youth film projects =20
from Lumby Lens and White Valley Resource Centre.

Showcasing the best of youth filmmaking, the Reel Youth Film Festival =20=

(RYFF) is a collection of surprisingly insightful and entertaining =20
short films made by youths aged 19 years and under. Ranging from the =20
comedic to the dramatic, using video and stop motion animation, this =20
year's films explore a wide range of themes, reflecting the diversity =20=

of the culture and concerns of youth today.

By providing a safe and creative space for culturally, socially and =20
economically diverse opinions to be expressed the RYFF supports =20
filmmakers with a message. In a shift from the issues highlighted in =20
RYFF 2006, this year=E2=80=99s entries tackle such weighty topics as =20
environmental degradation, species extinction, war, bullying, racism, =20=

oil tankers and severe storms.

Film festival submissions come from independent collectives, youth =20
filmmaking organizations, school media classes and the Reel Youth =20
program series. A youth jury chooses the films to be screened from =20
over 300 submissions from across Canada, the US and beyond. The jury =20=

makes their selections based on entertainment value, technical merit =20
and the messages the films portray.

Following each screening, a panel of local youth filmmakers will be =20
on hand to participate in a facilitated discussion with the audience. =20=

This community forum creates an important opportunity for dialogue =20
around the issues raised by the films, and recognizes and empowers =20
the youth voice in each of the communities.

Audience members can also vote for their favourite films in eleven =20
categories including: Best Film Promoting Positive Social Change, =20
Best Film Promoting Environmental Awareness, Best Claymation and Best =20=

Local Film. These People=E2=80=99s Choice Awards support future youth =20=

filmmaking with prizes ranging from film camp scholarships, =20
equipment, and professional mentorship. Winning films will also be =20
hosted on the Reel Youth website.

RYFF is touring 24 communities in Canada and the United States from =20
September through November, 2007. RYFF is also featured in several =20
major North American film festivals including the Vancouver and =20
Edmonton International Film Festivals and Portland=E2=80=99s Ten or Less =
=20
Film Festival. The tour will also reach communities in: Toronto, =20
Montreal, Victoria, Ottawa, Yellowknife, Winnipeg, Fredericton, =20
Yorkton, St. John=E2=80=99s, and Seattle.
