The Old Log Church Museum is happy to announce there is still =
availability of a special travelling exhibition entitled The Bishop Who =
Ate His Boots. Organized by the Old Log Church Museum with assistance =
from the Manitoba Museum, and the General Synod Archives, Anglican =
Church of Canada, this exhibition offers the unique perspective of a =
young Anglican missionary couple, Isaac and Sadie Stringer, who in 1896 =
answered the call to establish a mission above the Arctic Circle at =
Herschel Island.
IMPORTANT INFORMATION: We are working to secure MAP funding to pay for =
shipping costs for this travelling exhibition. If you might be =
interested in this exhibit, but would likely only be able to book it if =
shipping costs were underwritten, please submit an Expression of =
Interest before Oct 26, 2007 (no commitment is needed) with that =
provision included as this is required documentation for our MAP funding =
application. =20

Additional information about this exhibition:
Located off the north coast of Yukon in the Beaufort Sea, Herschel =
Island is an important part of the traditional homeland of the =
Inuvialuit of the western Arctic. During the 1890s it was also an =
important temporary base for American commercial whalers. These years of =
American contact on the island coincide with the Stringers arrival and =
the establishment of the permanent mission.
The Stringers kept meticulous records of life on Herschel Island in the =
form of journals, photographs, and correspondence. They also amassed a =
large collection of Inuvialuit and whaling artifacts which they used to =
illustrate their mission at fundraising lectures in southern Canada and =
England. Some of this material is featured in The Bishop Who Ate His =
Boots exhibition and vividly captures the essence of what it was like to =
live in the Arctic during the late 1890s in rudimentary living =
conditions and among people of different cultures.
An engaging and informative mix of 3 dimensional displays and =
multi-media presentations, the exhibition also touches on other diverse =
topics such as Inuvialuit culture, the fur trade, and the attitudes of =
the Victorian time period.=20
The Bishop Who Ate His Boots exhibition will appeal to museum audiences =
of all ages and bring to Canadians a greater awareness of a little known =
aspect of Yukon and Canadian history.=20
=20
DATES STILL AVAILABLE: January to May 2008, September to November 2008, =
November to April 2009, any dates after October 2009.
COST: Exhibit booking fee $1000 for three months + one way pro-rated =
shipping cost to venue*
*if funding is secured for shipping, borrower would not need to pay any =
shipping costs
For more information or to book The Bishop Who Ate His Boots travelling =
exhibition, please contact Taryn Parker at (867) 668-2555 or email =
