EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
Reporting to the Board of Trustees, the Executive Director of Napa Valley
Museum (NVM) serves as the chief administrative officer of the organization,
initiating or implementing policies and a program approved or defined by the
Museum Board of Trustees and is responsible for the day-to-day operation of
the Museum.
DESCRIPTION
Management: The Director demonstrates the interpersonal skills and abilities
necessary to lead and motivate a diverse constituency, including NVM staff,
volunteers, partners and board members. S/he is responsible for oversight
and daily supervision of all NVM employees, contractors and volunteers to
ensure goals and objectives are met in a nurturing and rewarding team
environment. S/he is well-organized, energetic, and results-oriented.
The Director is responsible for the timely development and successful
implementation of the annual budget. S/he provides analysis, support, and
recommendations to the board treasurer and executive, endowment, and finance
committees regarding all financial matters of NVM. S/he has competent
computer skills and a working knowledge of data management systems,
organization record keeping and other electronic media.
The Director works with the board of trustees and staff to ensure that NVM
complies with all applicable laws and regulations. S/he organizes all NVM
board meetings and prepares and presents a monthly accomplishment report.
S/he serves as an advisory member of the executive committee and facilitates
development of strategic plans for the organization. S/he oversees
agreements with other agencies, organizations and partners.
Resource Development: The Director serves a leadership role for all
fundraising activities of NVM, in collaboration with the board of trustees
S/he creates a balanced mix of revenue sources tailored to meet the short-
and long-term needs of NVM. S/he develops goals and strategies for annual
operations and capital fundraising projects; develops, cultivates and
solicits a portfolio of major gift donor prospects; organizes special donor
cultivation events; oversees development of supporting materials; and
provides recognition and stewardship of major donors. S/he is responsible
for the preparation, distribution and implementation of grants from both
public and private sources in support of NVM strategic priorities.
Communication and Outreach: The Director demonstrates excellent
communication skills, both verbal and written. S/he provides organizational
continuity and support for the board, staff and volunteers. S/he is the
primary spokesperson for all NVM programs. S/he actively seeks appropriate
media opportunities and ensures that the Museum and its Mission are
effectively presented to various publics. S/he is responsible for
establishing and maintaining positive, collaborative relationships with all
government, civic, corporate, educational, and environmental groups and
partners.
Programs: S/he is responsible for the direction and general oversight of all
programs, ensuring delivery of high quality activities. This includes
implementing the long-term vision for NVM education exhibition and
development programs. It is also the responsibility of the Director to stay
current with new information and ideas through continuing education and
networking with other organizations and educators.
QUALIFICATIONS
An advanced degree in history, art, environmental science or a related
field. Minimum of 5+ years of progressively responsible experience, managing
a staff or department, in a museum or related institution. Demonstrated
record of success in fund-raising and institutional planning. Working
knowledge of nonprofit fiscal management and budgeting.
Commitment to excellence in all aspects of museum management, including
scholarship, education, collections care, and public outreach. Candidate
must be able to articulate the value of the museum in community, and the
value of professional development to museum management.
Excellent interpersonal and written/oral communication skills. Sensitivity
to cultural and professional diversity is a must. Ability to lead and
motivate staff, board, volunteers, and donors, and to expand interest in and
support of the NVM and its mission.
The NVM is a small organization with big impact, so the candidate must be
creative and resourceful, and demonstrate an effective and efficient
approach to problem solving. Hands-on management is required, as the
organization currently has five F/T and six P/T staff.
ABOUT THE MUSEUM
The Napa Valley Museum is dedicated to promoting the cultural and
environmental heritage of Napa Valley. Our special, changing and permanent
exhibits represent a diverse range of subjects from fine arts to history to
natural sciences.
The current facility is located in Yountville in the heart of wine country.
The board has embarked on a capital campaign to fund and construct a new
museum in downtown Napa in partnership with the city. In addition to other
management responsibilities described above, the new executive director will
work with the board on this exciting project to promote and develop this new
facility.

Commensurate with qualifications and experience.
