Introduction to Heritage Tourism
An introductory workshop for museum professionals, community leaders,
heritage planners, employees and business owners in the tourism industry,
students in tourism, history and business programs as well as citizens
interested in new ways to improve their local community. The workshop
introduces participants to the benefits of heritage tourism to their local
community and their tourism business or cultural organization. Hands-on
exercises will provide participants with the tools to develop their own
heritage tourism action plan.

Facilitator: Ursula Pfahler is the owner and operator of Poda
Communications, a tourism consulting and training business. She has
facilitated a wide variety of tourism workshops in BC communities and
regularly presents on Heritage/Cultural Tourism issues at tourism
conferences and in educational institutions such as the Cultural Resource
Management Program at UVic, the Tourism Management Program at Capilano
College and Camosun College. She has been involved in BC's tourism industry
for over 13 years - and all aspects of group travel including tour design,
administration and marketing. Ursula has a passion for aboriginal tourism
and has been a member of Aboriginal Tourism BC since 1999. Ursula is a
certified SuperHost community trainer for Tourism Victoria and a Master
Trainer for Tourism BC.
Janet Jones has facilitated Heritage Tourism Workshops in British Columbia
communities including Terrace, Duncan, Ladysmith, Colwood, Surrey, Powell
River and Oliver drawing from 36 years of experience in the federal
government including Manager of the Victoria office of the federal
Department of Canadian Heritage, responsible for the delivery on Vancouver
Island and the BC North Coast, of a multitude of national programs relating
to arts, culture, heritage and museums, official languages, Canadian
identity, exchanges, multiculturalism and sport, all of which are linked to
tourism. Janet is a member of the Tourism Victoria Strategic Issues
Committees and participates in BC Cruise Initiative workshops in Prince
Rupert and Campbell River. She speaks on Heritage/Cultural Tourism issues at
conferences in BC (Aboriginal Tourism Conference in Prince Rupert, BC
Museums Association's Annual Conference, Heritage Society of British
Columbia, BC Parks and Recreation Association) and in the United States at
Western Museums Association conferences.
