About the project
The Arts, Health and Seniors Project is a community-engaged art
demonstration project that explores how involvement in the arts can
improve the health and well being of seniors facing barriers. This
three year initiative is the fruit of a partnership between Vancouver
Park Board, Vancouver Coastal Health, Parkgate Services Society,
UBC
and the SMART Fund.
Seniors will work weekly with professional artists with strong
community-based practice for two hour workshops to develop a
collaborative art piece that raises issues of importance to seniors.
An annual performance or exhibition will be created by each group of
seniors.
About the position
One internships positions has been opened for Fine Arts students or
recent graduates fluent in Cantonese to work with the Host Artist at
Strathcona Community Centre. The interns will provide translation and
artistic assistance to the Host Artist during the 2 hrs weekly
workshops, as well as the preparation of the annual exhibition/
performance. This is a part-time position (4-5 hrs/week).
Qualifications
· Good oral communication skills and fluency in Cantonese
· Training in Fine Arts
· Available to start in late September 2007.
· Experience working with seniors is desired
· Experience working with the Chinese Canadian community is
an asset
Mentorship and Community of Practice
The ideal candidate is a Fine Arts student or recent graduate, fluent
in Cantonese and passionate to learn more about community-based
arts
practice with seniors and interested in a collaborative model of
work. In the project, the intern will find numerous mentors to
support his/her professional development in community-engaged arts.
As one of the first projects of its kind in Canada, the Arts, Health
and Seniors project will be generating new knowledge in the field.
This will be stimulated by the many research, evaluation and
knowledge sharing strategies that have been built into the program.
Interns will gain access these resources and will be encouraged to
become part of the community of practice in this field.
Interested applicants need to submit a current CV and cover letter
detailing how you would contribute to the project and what you are
hoping to get out of this experience. Only shortlisted applicants
will be contacted for an interview.
