EVENTS THIS WEEK!

Opening of New Museum Shop

Saturday, September 15 & Sunday, September 16, 2007, 2:00 pm to 5:00 pm

After months of hammering, sawing, cabling, and carpet-laying, our new
Museum Shop officially opens with two days of public celebration on
September 15 and 16. Join us for refreshments, artist demos, prize draws,
and performances by local Latin jazz favorites Locura (Saturday at 3:00 pm)
and Battery Opera (on Sunday at 3:00 pm) - and shop 'til you drop in our
beautiful new store.

Locura: Classic Latin Jazz

Saturday, September 15, 2007, 3:00 pm

Unrelenting and infectious! From the Cuban influence on the New York jazz
scene in the 40's to the Brazilian contribution of bosso nova and samba, to
the Puerto Rican and Dominican melding of their respective rhythms, Locura
celebrated the music that has evolved from these rich collaborations. Led by
singer Deborah Ledon from Havana, Cuba.

Battery Opera: "Bob's Lounge - under the oppressive weight of history in the
Great Hall at MOA"

Sunday, September 16, 2007, 3:00 pm

The past sure is tense, so lounge a bit with Bob beneath the totems in the
concrete Erickson box on the cliffs above the Salish Sea. It's beautiful all
right, but how did we get here? Is culture the oppressor of the artist? Is
anthropology the tool of imperialism? Is fantasy the beginning of fascism?
All good food for thought, but at Bob's Lounge we serve only love songs. Led
by choreographer-dancer Lee Su-Feh and writer-singer David McIntosh, Battery
Opera has produced an award-winning repertoire of challenging dance and
theatre works since 1995. With Max Murphy (baritone saxophone), Finn
Manniche (cello), and Paul Ternes (as the Austrian). This concert is
presented as the first in our Sunday series of three dance and music
performances, "Stimulating the Senses: Music and Movement at MOA."

EVENTS IN OCTOBER

Maize: The Plant that Colonized the World

Tuesday, October 16, 2007, 7:00 pm

Speaker: Dr. Michael Blake

Teams of scientists using a wide array of new techniques for detecting and
studying ancient maize (corn) throughout the Americas are making surprising
new discoveries about where, when, and how the plant was first domesticated.
They are also tracing its journey from 10,000 years ago in south-western
Mexico, to the far reaches of South America and the borderlands of Canada
and the U.S. By examining some of these new discoveries, ways that maize and
humans forged a kind of mutual dependency in the millennia following its
domestication will be explored. The ancient adaptability of Maize is
reflected in its present-day roles as one of the world's top three food
crops and as a potential source of the biofuel ethanol for the 21st century.
Dr. Michael Blake is Associate Professor, UBC Department of Anthropology.
This is the first in our series of three talks on diverse topics related to
current archaeology, "Back to the Future: Archaeology in the 21st century."

Kokoro Dance: "Heart, Mind, Spirit, & Soul"

Sunday, October 28, 2007, 3:00 pm

Critically acclaimed Kokoro Dance combines kinetic and visual elements from
Japan and the West to create a uniquely Canadian butoh aesthetic. When
Kokoro Dance began in 1986, Barbara Bourget brought to it her years dancing
with the Royal Winnipeg Ballet and Grands Ballets Canadiens, and Jay
Hirabayashi drew upon his experiences dancing with the Paula Ross Dance
Company, competitive alpine skiing, and studying Buddhism. The company has
produced over 900 performances and created more than 150 dance works that
have been performed across Canada, in the United States, and in Europe. With
Carolyn Chan and Holly Holt. This concert is presented as the second in our
Sunday series of three dance and music performances, "Stimulating the
Senses: Music and Movement at MOA."

EXHIBITIONS

NEW! Seeing is Believing: Photographs from the Archives

October 1 - December 31, 2007, Gallery 10

There are more than 90,000 historic photographs in the Archives at the
Museum of Anthropology. The collection is worldwide, covers a multitude of
subjects, and dates from the early 1900s to the present day. This exhibit
reveals only a tiny portion of this hidden gem, yet hints at the remarkable
potential of this collection for scholars, researchers, and visitors.
Geographically, the collection includes images from the Northwest Coast of
British Columbia, the Southwest United States, South America, and various
areas of Asia, Oceania and Africa. Institutionally, the collection documents
the people and events that were instrumental in the history and growth of
the Museum.

Michael Nicoll Yahgulanaas - Meddling in the Museum

July 10 - December 31, 2007 (various locations at MOA)

Haida artist Michael Nicoll Yahgulanaas mixes it up at MOA with three
site-specific installations inspired by the Museum's current Renewal
Project. Michael's new works incorporate media as diverse as a
stolen-but-recovered car hoods and copper leaf (Coppers from the Hood), an
entire canoe-bearing Pontiac Firefly (Pedal to the Meddle), and an
interactive Haida manga mural using abandoned archaeology storage trays
(Bone Box). In the process, he brings his own brand of humour, narrative,
and social commentary to jumpstart new debates in the Museum's changing
spaces. Installations curated by Karen Duffek, Curator, Contemporary Visual
Arts. Thanks to Canada Council for the Arts for their support of this
project.

The History of Walas Gwaxwiwe-The Great Raven Hamsiwe'

Ongoing; Corridor Case opposite Bill Reid's Raven Sculpture

This small exhibit showcases the magnificent Great Raven Hamiswe' mask that
MOA purchased from a Vancouver shop in 1962, and for which William Wasden
Jr. has been able to reconstruct a detailed history by working with
knowledgeable Kwakwaka'wakw elders from his home community of Alert Bay,
B.C. Through accompanying labels, photographs, and video, William tells the
story of how this mask and the privilege it represents first came to the
Scow family, the potlatches at which this privilege was shown, and how Beau
Dick carved a new version of this mask in 1993 so that it could continue to
be danced. He also explores the question of who carved the original mask.

"A Partnership of Peoples" Exhibit

The Museum has embarked upon a major Renewal Project known as "A Partnership
of Peoples" (for details, see <blocked::file:///C:/Documents and
Settings/jwebb/Local Settings/Temporary Internet
Files/OLK790/www.moa.ubc.ca/renewal> www.moa.ubc.ca/renewal). In this
exhibit, MOA displays its plans for expansion and renovation, a scale model,
and samples of architectural details, finishings, and furnishings. We also
open a window onto our Digitization Studio, in which a team of professional
photographers use state-of-the-art digital cameras and high-speed computers
to capture high resolution images of the collections throughout the day.
