MUSEUM CURATOR
2007-I-82
$27.61 - $32.59 per hour
This is professional curatorial work that involves responsibility for
the City’s artifact collections, Museum reference library and teaching
collection. The incumbent updates and maintains automated and hard copy
collections records including accession registers, donor files, loan
forms and finding aides. Practises preventative conservation to ensure
mitigation of threats to collections and is responsible for training
Museum & Heritage Services staff and volunteers in applicable aspects of
collections management, particularly proper storage and display
techniques and care and handling of artifacts. Writes curatorial grants
and acts as a curatorial resource for the City’s heritage sites.
Recruits, trains and supervises curatorial grant staff and volunteers.
Develops and implements curatorial community awareness programs using
both the internet and printed material. Works with Richmond Museum
Society Collections Committee to establish collections policies and is
responsible for artifact and library acquisitions and de-accessions. May
develop, research, design and install occasional exhibitions. Updates
and maintains Museum's database and website.
Bachelor’s degree in related discipline including or supplemented by
courses in museum studies and/or cultural resource management plus 2-5
years curatorial experience. Considerable knowledge of the Museum and
Heritage profession, institutions and sites including industry methods
and principles and national standards and guidelines. Considerable
knowledge of collections management, including methods for optimum
physical and intellectual access with minimum intervention. Considerable
knowledge of collections policy standards and museum display techniques.
Considerable knowledge of artifact conservation. Working knowledge of
exhibit development, school programming and public programming within a
Museum environment. Working knowledge of photography. Knowledge of
Canadian, B.C. and/or Richmond history an asset. Ability to carry out
all functions of collections management from acquisition to deposition.
Ability to manage a customized database. Demonstrated ability in
grantsmanship. Ability to prepare and/or present various reports and to
compile statistical data. Ability to implement curatorial community
awareness programs on line, in print and/or using other appropriate
media. Ability to successfully pass a criminal record check.
