a provincial basis, the revenues of Ontario-based organizations</span></f=

talled $387 million (37% of the Canadian total), while Quebec-based</span>=

ganizations accounted for $314 million (30% of Canadian revenues).</span><=

e revenues of British Columbia-based heritage organizations totalled</span=

57 million (15% of national revenues), while their Alberta</span></font></=

<div align=3D"left"><font face=3D"Arial"><span style=3D"font-size:10pt">co=
unterparts accounted for $81 million (8%).</span></font></div>

r non-profit organizations, total revenues were $924 million,</span></font=

presenting 89% of the sectoral total but only a 0.2% increase from</span><=

04. Non-profit museums (other than art galleries) had total revenues</span=

$441 million in 2005, a 0.6% decrease from 2004. Non-profit art</span></f=

lleries reported total revenues of $246 million, a 1.3% increase</span></f=
ont></div>

om 2004. Non-profit zoos and botanical gardens had total revenues
of $152 million in 2005, a 3.3% increase from 2004. Finally, non-profit</s=

storic and heritage sites reported total revenues of $85 million in</span>=

tal expenditures in the non-profit heritage sector were $1.03</span></font=

llion in 2005, including $477 million (46%) in staff salaries, wages</span=

e non-profit heritage sector in Canada registered essentially a</span></fo=

lanced budget (a very small collective deficit of $1.3 million, or</span><=

1% of revenues). However, three types of not-for-profit heritage</span></f=
ont></div>
<div align=3D"left"><font face=3D"Arial"><span style=3D"font-size:10pt">or=
ganizations registered a collective deficit in 2005, including</span></fon=

<div align=3D"left"><font face=3D"Arial"><span style=3D"font-size:10pt">mu=
seums ($9.1 million, or 2.1% of revenues), art galleries ($3.8</span></fon=
t></div>

llion, or 1.5% of revenues), and historic and heritage sites ($1.0</span><=

llion, or 1.2% of revenues). Only zoos and botanical gardens posted</span>=
</font></div>

surplus ($12.5 million, or 8.2% of revenues).</span></font></div>

lleries participated in the survey, including 43 public museums, 48</span>=

blic art galleries, 12 university-affiliated art galleries or</span></font=

05-06, with government revenues accounting for $345 million (68%
of total revenues). Earned revenues were $110 million (22% of total</span>=

venues). Private revenues equalled $49 million (10% of total</span></font>=

seums and galleries was $19 million (4% of 2005-06 revenues) at

e 117 museums and galleries attracted over 13 million visitors in</span></=

r these 75 organizations, total revenues increased by 15% after</span></fo=

justing for inflation. Revenue increases were quite widespread, with</span=

<div align=3D"left"><font face=3D"Arial"><span style=3D"font-size:10pt">68=
% of the museums and galleries (51 of 75 organizations) registering</span>=

real increase in revenues. Total expenses kept pace with the</span></font>=

<div align=3D"left"><font face=3D"Arial"><span style=3D"font-size:10pt">in=
crease in total revenues, also growing by 15% after inflation. Of</span></=
font></div>
<div align=3D"left"><font face=3D"Arial"><span style=3D"font-size:10pt">al=
l the revenue categories, private sector revenues grew at the</span></font=
></div>
<div align=3D"left"><font face=3D"Arial"><span style=3D"font-size:10pt">fa=
stest rate (a 38% increase after adjusting for inflation). </span></font><=

tween 1996-97 and 2005-06, there were shifts in the organizations’</s=

urces of funding: government funding decreased from 71% to 69%
of total revenues. Earned revenues increased from 20% to 22% of
revenues. Private sector funding increased from 7% to 9% of total
revenues, while university grants were just under 1% of total revenues

tendance at the 75 museums and galleries increased slightly, from</span></=

experienced the highest growth in revenues between 1996-97 and
2005-06 (62% after adjusting for inflation). The smallest museums and
galleries also experienced the highest growth in private sector
revenues (more than a threefold increase, after adjusting for inflation).<=
