Meet eleven-year-old Ipah, a Muslim girl whose favorite food is Kentucky Fried Chicken. Ipah loves to eat so much that she finds it difficult to fast during the Islamic fasting month of Ramadhan. Then there’s Yogha, a teenager who plays the guitar in a local punk rock band. His favorite holiday is Idul Adha because he likes to help out with delivering food to poor people in the nearby villages.

Ipah and Yogha are just two of the forty Indonesian children you will meet in this colourful art exhibition entitled “The Many Colors of Islam.”

In 2004, children from four prominent art organizations in Indonesia were invited to participate in the “The Many Colors of Islam” exhibition project. The purpose of the project was to introduce North American children and their families to the lives of Muslim children in Indonesia through artistic expression.

The Indonesian children were asked to create their self-portrait or a narrative piece illustrating their experience with Islam. Over 100 Indonesian children enthusiastically participated. In the exhibit, the youth are given voice and presence through the inclusion of personally-written artist statements accompanied by their photographs. This exhibition of children’s artwork and stories thus provides a window into their world: their lives in Indonesia, their values and beliefs as well as their cultural traditions.

The children of Indonesia use the international language of art to illustrate our common humanity while demonstrating the individual and diverse characteristics that make their culture unique.
