Free Collaborative Art Workshops for Native Youth

        Sunday, April 6

        Saturday, April 26

        10:00 am to 4:00 pm

Ken Lepin and Tricia Sellmer Studios

The Kamloops Art Gallery (KAG) invites Native youth in the
Thompson-Nicola Regional District to participate in a series of free art
workshops with two professional artists, Jayce Salloum and Meeka Morgan
<http://www.kag.bc.ca/SiteCM/U/D/BFE31C14B65FD1C8.pdf>. Participants
have the opportunity to work with painting and videotaping, but the
workshops can also incorporate music, sculpture, photography, and other
art forms, depending on participants’ interests. All participants work
towards the creation of a large-scale, collaborative work of art, which
will be exhibited in fall 2009 at the Kamloops Art Gallery as part of
Salloum’s survey exhibition, /Jayce Salloum: history of the present
[selected work 1984 to 2009]./

KAG has been offering collaborative art-making workshops with Salloum
and Morgan on an irregular basis since May 2007. Now, thanks to generous
grants from Arts Partners in Creative Development
<http://www.artspartners.ca/>and Canadian Art Foundation
<http://www.canadianart.ca/foundation/>, KAG can now offer these
workshops as often as twice per month beginning February 3, 2008, until
the middle of 2009.

During the workshops, participants develop their talents and learn new
skills, depending on their interests, including interview and
communication skills, storytelling and expressive skills, and technical
skills with videotaping equipment. They meet with Elders and share
stories, and meet with visiting artists. Through all of this, they
contribute their talents to a large collaborative artwork that combines
self-expression and self-representation with elements developed out of
workshop experiences.

The collaborative artwork then has the opportunity to tour with the
exhibition to other galleries nationally and internationally. All
participants will be fully credited on exhibition wall labels and
documentation. The workshops and all materials are offered free to
participants by the Kamloops Art Gallery and project sponsors.

    Lunch and Learn

        Wednesday, April 30

        12:10 to 12:50 pm

Ken Lepin and Tricia Sellmer Studios

In conjunction with the exhibition /Art and Society in Canada
1913-1950/, organized and circulated by the National Gallery of Canada,
KAG is hosting a lecture on the Social Realists (April 30). Come and
listen to the speakers, while enjoying lunch provided by Kamloops
Catering & Event Services. Tickets are $20 each. Please purchase tickets
at least two business days in advance at The Gallery Store.

      Social Realists

In the 1930s the Social Realist painters began creating art that
addressed the political, economic and social crises of the time.
Russian-born Canadian painter Paraskeva Clark, was one of the most
accomplished of these artists. Using realism as a mode of expression,
she used art to convey her political convictions and concern for the
labouring class. Jen Budney, KAG Curator, gives a lecture on Clark and
the motivations behind her artwork.

Ken Lepin and Tricia Sellmer Studios

The Kamloops Art Gallery (KAG) invites Native youth in
the Thompson-Nicola Regional District to participate in a series of
free art workshops with two professional artists, Jayce Salloum and Meeka Morgan. Participants have
the opportunity to work with painting and videotaping, but the
workshops can also incorporate music, sculpture, photography, and other
art forms, depending on participants’ interests. All participants work
towards the creation of a large-scale, collaborative work of art, which
will be exhibited in fall 2009 at the Kamloops Art Gallery as part of
Salloum’s survey exhibition, Jayce Salloum: history of the present
[selected work 1984 to 2009].

KAG has been offering collaborative art-making workshops
with Salloum and Morgan on an irregular basis since May 2007. Now,
thanks to generous grants from Arts Partners in
Creative Development and Canadian
Art Foundation, KAG can now offer these workshops as often as twice
per month beginning February 3, 2008, until the middle of 2009.

During the workshops, participants develop their talents
and learn new skills, depending on their interests, including interview
and communication skills, storytelling and expressive skills, and
technical skills with videotaping equipment. They meet with Elders and
share stories, and meet with visiting artists. Through all of this,
they contribute their talents to a large collaborative artwork that
combines self-expression and self-representation with elements
developed out of workshop experiences.

The collaborative artwork then has the opportunity to
tour with the exhibition to other galleries nationally and
internationally. All participants will be fully credited on exhibition
wall labels and documentation. The workshops and all materials are
offered free to participants by the Kamloops Art Gallery and project
sponsors.

Social Realists

In the 1930s the Social Realist painters began creating
art that addressed the political, economic and social crises of the
time. Russian-born Canadian painter Paraskeva Clark, was one of the
most accomplished of these artists. Using realism as a mode of
expression, she used art to convey her political convictions and
concern for the labouring class. Jen Budney, KAG Curator, gives a
lecture on Clark and the motivations behind her artwork.
