Greetings from Hope - the Hope Visitor Centre & Museum Complex are
co-located on District of Hope property at 919 Water Avenue. The =
buildings
are connected to one another so they share public washroom facilities;
telephone & FAX line, Internet access, parking lot, public picnic =
tables,
use of office equipment (photocopier, computer, printer etc) and so =
forth.
The buildings and contents belong to the District of Hope, They are also =
the
official sponsors of the Hope Visitor Centre through Tourism BC.
=20
The operation and management of the facility are contracted out and
Destination Hope & Beyond Services (my business) currently holds that
contract (since 2003). I am responsible for all costs of operations =
(staff,
office, maintenance -indoors & out -, special events etc etc). The Hope =
&
District Chamber of Commerce is not involved in this arrangement and =
there
is no local historical society or Museum organization so I report =
directly
to the Mayor & Council of Hope via their management staff.
=20
I believe it is an efficient use of public funds to operate in this =
fashion
- the two operations are symbiotic as travelers come to use one facility =
and
then end up supporting the other as well. One inquiry for the Museum may
lead back to the Visitor Centre, while another in the Visitor Centre may
lead to further questions in the Museum.
=20
While the Visitor Centre is open year round the Museum is open only for =
the
peak travel season of the May Victoria Day weekend through to the =
September
Labour Day weekend. Questions regarding research or donations to the =
Museum
will however be answered year round as I am onsite for the Visitor =
Centre.
=20
Anyone who has further questions regarding our operations is welcome to
contact me via the information below.

Subject: [Bcma-l] Museums and Visitor Information Centres
=20
Does your Museum run your community's Visitor Information Centre? Or, =
does
your Museum coexist in the same facility as your Visitor Information =
Centre?
I am conducting some research on these two questions and am interested =
in
hearing back from the listserv.
=20
I know that some discussion on this topic took place in November 2006 on
CANMUSE-L, but hearing more would be very interesting. It seems that
community museums may be leading the way in this relationship with =
tourism.
=20
The BCMA has asked that replys to these two questions be posted to the
listserv as this tourism topic may be of interest to a few of us. =
Please
let us know about your situation plus the pros and cons of such an
arrangement.
