UBC, one of the largest and most distinguished universities in Canada,

The visual art program partners with strong art history and curatorial 
studies programs, integrating the visual arts, art history and theory 
within the curriculum.  The department is also associated with a leading 
contemporary art gallery, the Morris and Helen Belkin Art Gallery, and 
the internationally recognized Museum of Anthropology.

This Gallery Coordinator, is a temporary part time appointment, working 
closely with the Department Administrator and Gallery Director to 
established a new Art Gallery and student training program at the 
Undergraduate and Graduate levels.  The long-term vision is for the 
Gallery to be student run under the supervision of a Faculty Gallery 
Director.

The Gallery Coordinator is responsible for the day-to-day operation of 
the Gallery.  Responsibilities include: establishing a volunteer 
program; coordinating special events including conferences, lectures, 
and exhibition openings; coordinating didactic information for 
exhibition labels, promotional information; assist with recruitment of 
student Gallery Assistants and Volunteers and oversee their daily 
scheduling, duties, supervision, training and mentoring.  The 
Coordinator will work with the Director and student advisory committee 
regarding programming and collaborations including planning of 
exhibitions; development and distribution of submission calls and 
implementation and coordination of a Promotional Plan.  The Coordinator 
will maintain records and databases including exhibition schedule, 
special events, media coverage, exhibition and events documentation; and 
will prepare and track gallery expense reimbursements.

Qualifications

·         A University degree in Fine Arts, Art History or related 
field, courses or related training in Volunteer Management and 
preventative gallery/museum conservation practices and techniques plus a 
minimum of 4 years experience in planning and overseeing Special Events 
and/or Public Programs in a public art gallery or related organization.
·         Experience in a public relations or marketing function or 
equivalent in a related field;
·         Good understanding and knowledge of visual information 
pertaining to contemporary art practices and art history;
·         Significant experience in preventative conservation practices 
and techniques regarding the handling, and exhibition of artwork and 
objects composed of diverse materials in accordance with gallery/museum 
conservation standards;
·         Experience at planning, setting priorities and working under 
firm deadline pressures;
·         Ability to simultaneously work on several projects;
·         Effective oral and written communications and research skills;
·         Demonstrated ability to effectively communicate issues in 
contemporary art, gallery ethics and practices to large groups of people 
from diverse backgrounds;
·         Demonstrated ability to instruct, manage and work with 
students and volunteers;
·         Ability to establish and maintain effective working 
relationships with diverse internal and external contacts such as 
curators, artists, staff, faculty, professionals from other institutions 
and departments, graphic designers, rental/equipment suppliers;
·         Ability to both make independent decisions exercising 
initiative and work within a team environment;
·         Good understanding of Gallery ethics, practices, policies, 
issues in contemporary art, issues of copyright and representation
·         Computer skills on PC and Macintosh
·         Serving It Right License required.
