BOWEN ISLAND COMMUNITY MUSEUM

Summer Speaker Series Continues!

=20

What is a multidisciplinary performing artist doing on stage at a =
science
conference? What pieces of Expressionist art survived Nazi destruction, =
and
were discovered decades later in the attic of the Arts and Craft Museum =
in
Hamburg? What juicy stories will you hear about the theatre scene on =
Bowen
Island?=20

=20

Find out at the Bowen Island Community Museum=92s History of Theatre on =
Bowen
Summer Speaker Series! There are 3 sessions left.

=20

All talks begin at 2:00 pm at the Museum.

=20

Sat, Aug 9th =96 Pauline Le Bel

An Emmy-nominated screenwriter, playwright, novelist, actor, singer and
songwriter, Pauline has been a full-time artist since receiving her =
Bachelor
of Music in 1975. She has performed internationally in theatres and =
concert
halls, and is the creator of the acclaimed Voices in the Sound festival,
which included her musical about Bowen by the same name. The play=92s =
=93Birth
of the Universe=94 theme has led Pauline to bridge the gap between art =
and
science, taking her to such unexpected places as science conferences.

=20

Come and be entertained at this interactive session as Pauline talks =
about
her experiences in theatre, the scientific community, and her dramatic
transformation from =93the little sparrow=94 to =93cosmological =
troubadour.=94

=20

Sat, Aug 16th =96 Ines Ortner Gigling

Ines is a costume designer, fibre artist, a student of Theatre Studies =
and
Anthropology at UBC, and the Guest Curator of the Theatre on Bowen =
exhibit.
She will take the audience on a visual journey through some of the =
leading
avant-garde movements in 20th-century Central and Northern Europe. =
Featuring
rare photos of the uniquely beautiful conceptual costumes from the =
Bauhaus
school, and some fun costumes from Dada performances in Z=FCrich, =
Berlin, and
Paris, this talk is not just for costume-lovers and fashionistas, but =
also
for performance art enthusiasts, visual artists, and those curious to =
learn
more about this vibrant period.

=20

Audiences will also see photos of the extraordinary full body masks by
Expressionists Lavinia Schulz and Walter Holdt. These masks, hidden for
more than sixty years, survived the destruction of what the Nazis =
labeled as
=93degenerate art=94 during the 1930s and 1940s and were discovered in =
1988 in
the attic of the Museum f=FCr Kunst und Gewerbe in Hamburg.=20

=20

Thu, Aug 21st =96 Martin Clarke

Martin is a veteran thespian who taught Acting and Stagecraft at =
Steveston
Secondary. After moving to Bowen in 1976, he co-founded the island=92s
community theatre group, Theatre on the Isle (TOTI), the following year.
