Museum Learning
HA 488H (1.5 units); blended online/on-campus offering

Successful museums, galleries and related centres of informal learning prov=
ide their communities with welcoming environments in which diverse learning=
 experiences can take place. Explore with your colleagues what it means to =
learn. Develop your organization's potential to be a meaningful learning en=
vironment for your community with connections to facilities like archives, =
libraries, and schools. Build strategies to assess, assist and collaborate =
with your varied audiences so that they may learn in and use the museum and=
 its collections in ways that meet their needs and expectations.



This course will help to develop your understanding of:

?         History and types of learning theories used in the museum setting

?         International approaches to society's management of museum learni=
ng

?         Learning and interpretation strategies in relation to institution=
al mission and goals

?         Reaching new and traditional audiences

?         Spaces & facilities that support learning, including web-based ap=
proaches

?         Research on and evaluation of learning in non-school settings

?         Marketing museum learning

?         Learning partnerships amongst museums, libraries and archives

?         Communities of practice for museum educators, docents, and interp=
reters



It will enhance your ability to:

?         Define learning

?         Apply learning theories to the practice of museum education and i=
nterpretation

?         Build tools to strengthen creativity and collaboration

?         Develop a learning strategy + action plan

?         Create a museum environment that supports learning for varied aud=

Instructor:

Christine Castle is a consultant and peer reviewer for museums, galleries, =
historic sites, government agencies, and professional associations in Canad=
a, the United States, and the U.K. She is also the owner and editor of the =
e-newsletter Museum Education Monitor. Over thirty years in the museum fiel=
d, she has been, amongst other things, researcher, costumed interpreter, co=
mmunity museum director, and curator of an historic house.

Coming to the field with a B.A. in Modern History from the University of To=
ronto (1975) she holds an M.A. in Teaching, Museum Education (1981) from Th=
e George Washington University in Washington, D.C. and a Ph.D. in Education=
 from the University of Toronto (2001).

Christine has published and spoken widely on museum learning and the profes=
sional development of museum educators and has taught courses for the Unive=
rsity of Toronto, the University of Victoria, Brock University, and several=
 professional associations. She helped to develop local communities of prac=
tice in Toronto (MERT) and Hamilton, Ontario (HAM-ED). At the international=
 level she serves on the board of Museum-Ed and on the advisory panel for t=
he Journal of Education in Museums (JEM). In 2005 she was awarded the Lifet=
ime Achievement Award of Excellence by the Ontario Museum Association in re=
cognition of her contributions to the development of museum education.
