Certified Interpretive Planner Workshop
January 26-30, 2009
Fort Langley National Historic Site
Langley, British Columbia

Join Certified Interpretive Planners Lisa Brochu and Tim Merriman for an
intense, hands-on, 5-day planning workshop that will help you become
recognized as an NAI Certified Interpretive Planner or simply improve your
interpretive planning skills.

Working in small groups, participants will complete a planning project at
Fort Langley National Historic Site, Langley, British Columbia. The
workshop will include instruction time to acquaint you with a new model for
interpretive planning, developed by using real-world examples from Lisa's
25 years of experience as an interpretive planner. Participants also
receive a copy of Lisa's recently published book, "Interpretive Planning:
The 5-M Model for Successful Planning Projects."

Workshop Experience

You'll learn how to identify target markets and their implications for
interpretation; identify significant resources instead of inventorying
every plant and animal; develop thematic guidelines that make sense;
support your organizational mission through interpretation; select the most
appropriate media to communicate your message; and create visitor
experiences that translate into measurable success. You'll also apply what
you've learned and what you bring from your own experience to an actual
planning project on-site.

The workshop is designed for new and experienced planners and will help you
complete some of the requirements for the Certified Interpretive Planner
category. Participants who want to become certified must be eligible for
NAI's certification program. Proof of eligibility must accompany
registration.

CIP Certification

Please note that you are not required to take the class for CIP
certification, but it is highly recommended and will help you fulfil the
requirements as well as learning new skills or honing existing ones. You
may also take the class even if you do not wish to become certified, but
only want to improve skills.

Participants who are attempting certification can complete the Part 1 exam
at the workshop, working in small groups to complete the test. Everyone
will make a presentation of their work project on the last day of the
workshop. Successful completion of the workshop and the work
project/presentation substitutes for one plan and one product on the
evidences of performance required for certification.

Participants attempting certification will still need to complete their
Part 2 (essay) exam and the other evidences of performance within one year
of receiving their certification packet to finalize certification.
