The Cultural Resource Management Program at the University of Victoria, Bri=
tish Columbia is pleased to offer the following on-campus learning opportun=
ity for professionals and volunteers working in museums, heritage sites, an=
d cultural centres.
MANAGING CULTURAL ORGANIZATIONS
HA 488A (1.5 units); on-campus offering
This on-campus immersion course provides an intensive study of the applicat=
ion of management theory and practice in cultural organizations, with parti=
cular emphasis on: characteristics of non-profit cultural organizations; go=
vernance and leadership; establishing the mission, goals, and objectives; r=
oles of executive and artistic directors; policy development and implementa=
tion; personnel management and team building; financial management; strateg=
ic and operational planning; information management; public relations; mark=
eting; volunteer development; and ethical and legal issues.
Dates: February 2-7, 2009

Instructor: Carrie Brooks-Joiner
Carrie Brooks-Joiner is the owner of the consulting firm Carrie Brooks-Join=
er & Associates. The firm specializes in supporting the leadership and man=
agement of non-profit organizations and has a focus on the cultural sector.=
Carrie has been active in the non-profit community for almost three decade=
s and brings expertise in strategic planning, governance, policy developmen=
t, research, community development and facilitation. Carrie teaches at the=
university level and is a frequent conference speaker and workshop leader.
Carrie has held leadership positions in the nonprofit and public sectors. =
As a volunteer, she is a Vice President of the Burlington Public Library, a=
former President of the Ontario Museum Association and former Board member=
of Performing Arts Burlington.
Her educational background includes a Masters of Museum Studies from the Un=
iversity of Toronto, a Certificate in Voluntary Sector Management (with dis=
tinction) from York University and a certificate in non-profit governance f=
rom the McMaster University Governance Institute. Carrie is a 2003 graduat=
e of the Bay Area Leadership program.
